Mid Lancs Cross Country

MID LANCS XC No 5 – Leigh Sports Village. 10 th February 2019

Fortunately the winds abated in the afternoon and the rain held off so it was a great day for cross country running. The course is predominately flat but with sections through woods and along embankments as well as open country it is quite interesting. There was less mud than previous years but a narrow twisty section through trees proved tricky. Full results on our cross country page.

Thumbs up to February!  As the days draw out and the snow drops are blooming

The Blackburn Winter Warmer 10k on Sunday was blessed with good weather although there was still a good deal of snow lying around, and the race organisers Blackburn Road Runners had done an excellent job of gritting the course and sweeping all lanes of the athletic track used for the start and finish clear of snow. And they were well prepared for the 700+ competitors, a very good turnout for this hilly and countryfied course with its awesome initial climb up the notorious Bunser Lane.

Tanya Shaw and Jo McCaffery with Paul Carter with lots of other runners

The big action of the week was the Northern Athletics Cross Country Championships at Pontefact Racecourse on Saturday where conditions were bright and dry with a firm course. Wesham had a good entry, and in the Senior Women’s 8k race Anne Mayers-Smith finished 233rd in 39:46. The Senior men ran over 12k and right to the fore was Wesham’s Rob Danson who had a stormer of a run to finish 9th overall contesting the lead at one point, finishing in a time of 39:28 just 1:24 behind the race winner Emile Cairess of Leeds City. This will give Rob serious street cred in the Inter-Counties in March and is the best-ever performance by a Wesham athlete. David Taylor had a good run finishing 237th in 46:51; Mark Bellfield was 334th in 49:14; Mark Renshall a good run finishing 498th with 53:46; John Collier 589th in 57:40; Ben Wrigley 633rd with 1:01:08 and Martin Bates 639th in 1:01:24. Peter Bartlett finished 699th in 1:15:19.  The team placed 37th overall. There were 4 Lancashire clubs fielding a Men’s team and 3 clubs with a Women’s team.

Northern XC Pontefract

Rob Danson in the front pack

Northern Cross Country Championships – Pontefract. 27 January 2019
The Northern Cross Country Championships took place at Pontefract, by the racecourse. Conditions were good, the slight breeze, even temperature and lack of mud ensured a fast race. The course is deceptive as it appears fairly flat, though there are long gradual inclines which become more apparent the further you get into the race.
Once again Anne Mayers Smith was the sole flag bearer for the Wesham ladies so she takes all the plaudits. In contrast the men had eight athletes competing over the 3-lap 12.1km course. Wesham lined up in the pen next to Sale Harriers which fired Rob off to a fast start. In only his second cross country race of the season Rob finished 9 th , eleven seconds behind Lancashire Champion Daniel Bebbington and only four seconds behind perennial Mid-Lancs winner James Douglas. Dave Taylor was next home for Wesham followed by Mark Bellfield, Mark Renshall and John Collier. Ben Wrigley continued his improved form to close out the team, finishing just ahead of the doughty Martin Bates. Peter Bartlett had been struggling with a knee problem but courageously elected to run and complete the Wesham squad. Thanks to all those who competed.
