The Lancashire Cross Country Championships were held at Witton Park in good conditions – an intermittent light drizzle but a comfortable temperature for running. The lack of recent rain meant underfoot conditions were good, with the only muddy spot at the gate at the bottom of the hill. However, times were in general a couple of minutes down throughout the field on last year.
Three ladies turned out for the 3 lap ladies race, unfortunately one short of a senior team. Kath Hoyer ran strongly to lead the women home in 53 rd and her efforts were rewarded with a V60 bronze medal. Anne Mayers-Smith followed three places behind while Lucy Neighbour closed out the Wesham squad in 77 th spot.
53 Kath Hoyer L60 3 34:14
41 Anne Mayers-Smith L40 14 35:01
77 Lucy Neighbour L40 21 39:48
The ladies finished 8 th veteran team.
The men fielded twelve athletes competing over the gruelling 4-lap 9.8km course. First home was Steve Swarbrick in 40 th position, who registered as Bowland, so doesn’t count in the team results. Dave Taylor continued his good form to finish only 4 places behind. Mark Holton was next in 54 th position. A clutch of three runners followed led by Thom Crabtree in 61 st spot while Chris Hastwell edged out Andy Harling by 3 seconds for 62 position. Gary Barnett making a welcome return to cross country after a few season’s absence closed out the senior team in 100 th position. Steve Myerscough finished 12 places further back with Gary Pendlebury collecting a V65 silver medal in 121 st ahead of John Collier who picked up V65 bronze in 128 th . Stuart Clayton was 134 th with Martin Bates making his first appearance of the season closing out
the Wesham squad in 136 th .
