MID LANCS XC No 4 – Townley Park, Burnley.    12th January 2019

Now at the fourth Mid-Lancs fixture (where is the season going to?) and our numbers equaled that of the last fixture minus one woman!  While the League reported record numbers.  In stark contrast to the last League fixture in December at Hyndburn’s Wilsons Fields where steady heavy rain under leaden skies turned the course into a swimming pool here at Burnley today despite low cloud and early drizzle it eased off and was replaced by a gusting wind but it was warm enough, and the course was dry and firm, track runners conditions!

In the Women’s and Over-70s over 5.8 km with a short, medium and large lap only Kath Hoyer turned out; come on ladies, where are you!  Kath made a sterling effort and finished a fine 4th W55 and 75th with a time of 26:01. Anne Mayers-Smith was there at the event but circumstances meant she could not race.

The Men 70+ were brilliant, with solid packing to take 5th, 6th and 7th positions and storm an M70 team victory just holding off Chorley AC by 1 point!  Dave Young headed the team running 29:02 for the aforementioned 5.8k with a strong performance. Dave Waywell was next over the line in 30:07, a great run, and Peter Bartlett was admirable to overcome a troublesome knee and clock 30:48.  What a great team effort!

Next on was the pièce de résistance; the Senior Men’s 9.8km over a small and three large laps. The leaders stormed away from the start quickly opening up two strong groups with the mere mortals trailing in their wake. Dave Taylor was the Wesham Whippet with a strong run to finish 49th in 35:15. Andrew Harling was a strong backup coming in 67th with 36:08, with Phil Quibell a strident 3rd M60 22 seconds behind category winner Colin Shuttleworth, an old club-mate, clocking 37:39 for 104th place overall. Then a truly gripping competition amongst rival M60s, with Lytham’s Graham Webster pulling ahead of John Collier, with Nigel Shepherd making ground and pulling Lytham’s Terry Hellings into a 3-way dash over the final 800m. Nigel pulled ahead to finish 8th M60 and 202nd overall with 41:49; and Hellings just overhauled John Collier by 2 seconds who came in 11th and 206th overall in 42:02. Ben Wrigley ran an excellent race coming through the filed steadily to place 251st in 45:04 with Martin Bates 258th with 45:26.

The Senior Men’s team finished 21st overall, the Division placings not yet available, and the Men Masters 40+ (Quibell; Shepherd; Collier; Bates) were 18th; and the M50+ team were 8th (Quibell; Shepherd; Collier). Better placed were the M60 team who finished 2nd behind Kendal by just 2 points, and seem assured of team victory for the season overall.  Well done lads!

Nifty work with the tent assembly and pack away, and Alex was again in attendance for general dogs-body effort and encouragement.

Provisional Results (note team results are excluded as there are likely to be many changes).
