The Northern Athletics long and short stage Road Relays were held in Birkenhead Park for the second consecutive year and another warm fine day although with a bitter gusting wind this time. Wesham had two women’s teams over the 6-Stage, with Kay Twist (40:53); Carmel Sullivan (16:49); Sue Coulthurst (17:21) giving a tremendous performance; Louisa Denye (39:37); Alice Deacon (18:57); and Bernadette Dickinson (20:28) making up the “A” team with a cumulative time of 2:34:05 to finish 49th. Tanya Barlow (41:48); Emma Davies (20:44); Julie Rooney (23:07); Sharlan Butcher (44:17); Heather Buckel (22:33); and Antionette Halton (21:14) closed in the Wesham Ladies “B” team in 53rd place with 2:53:43. Stages 1 and 4 were 8km and the shorter stages were 4k. The Senior Men ran 8km on Stages 1,3,5 and 7, with the other stages 4km, and Simon Denye took out the Wesham Men’s “A” team with 28:56 to put them in 64th place. Steven Gore then ran 14:18; Lee Barlow 28:56; Chris Hastwell 14:17; David Taylor 28:41; Martin Bates 16:54; Thomas Crabtree 31:01; Mark Renshall 14:41; Mick Edge 16:47; John Collier 17:18; Colin Smy 18:48; and Jason Parkinson 15:52, closing the team 59th in 4:06:29. The “B” team finished 65th in 4:47:22, with Neil Gregson off on the first stage with 31:12 (69th); followed by Elliot Costello (15:40); Rob Wallace (33:54); Ben Wrigley (16:47); Ryan Azzopardi (37:24); Peter Bartlett (21:24); Peter Rooney (37:45); Dave Young (19:44); Graham Cunliffe (19:37); Stephen Twist (20:10); James Birchall (17:14); and Stuart Topping (16:31).
Anne Mayers-Smith ran the Cheshire Arley 10k on Saturday, finishing 35th woman and 6th W40 in 45:19, in 274th place overall. Helen Lawrenson travelled to Coventry for the Half Marathon, finishing 549th in a big race with a time of 1:40:50, 57th woman and 21st W45.
There were three Wesham runners in the Wilmslow Half Marathon on Sunday. Thomas Farquar finished 667th in 1:42:17 in this top-quality race. Martin Allison was 953rd in in 1:45:57, and Tanya Shaw finished 414th woman and 1791st place with a time of 2:00:04 and 81st W40. Jo McCaffery came in 563rd woman and 2096th overall in 2:06:42. Martin, Tanya and Jo all ran personal best times in this fast and very competitive race.
In the undulating Garstang Gallop over 7 miles Paul Hetherington finished 11th in a time of 43:53 winning the M40 age category. Mark Dobson came in 96th and 12th M50 in 60:55.
Anne Berry ran the Buttermere 20k Trail Race in Keswick and she finished 128th in 2:21:58, placing 11th W50.
Garry Barnett took part in his first triathlon early on Sunday morning at the Ribby Hall Triathlon, covering a 400m swim; 10.5 mile cycle; and 5k run. He completed the event in a combined time of 1:13:07, no full results available. Lisa Minns also took part, covering the combined distance in an excellent 1 hour 17 minutes. There was a bumper turnout at the Lytham Hall parkrun as Wesham’s most recent Couch to 5k programme reached its conclusion. At the sharp end Steve Swarbrick ran the second fastest time of the day with a swift 17:09 for an M45 age graded performance of 83.28%. Chris Hastwell had the fifth fastest time with an excellent 18:16 for an M35 grade of 72.17%. Both scored new personal best performances. Lee Nixon equalled his best with 20:33 for M35 65.45% and Jonathan Lawson an 22:44 for M50 65.40%. Ben Wrigley ran 23:22 with M35 57.56%; and Alice Deacon produced a new personal best with 24:07 for a percentage of 61.37%. Gary Moore also ran a best with 24:47 and M55 63.62%; Stuart Topping 24:49 with M45 58.50%; Ryan Azzopardi 26:18 recovering with M35 51.52%. Kay Twist was pace-making at 29:32 (W45 55.09%) with Stephen Twist (M50 50.73%) and Leah Birchall 32:29 for 45.56%. Kerry Eccles, leader of the C25K ran 33:05 (W55 45.56%) and Julie Rooney 34:38 for W40 45.43%. Antionette Halton clocked 34:39 with 43.00%; and Phil Leaver 35:28 with M65 42.47%. Julie Topping ran 35:39 and W45 45.91%; Linda Williamson 36:42 for W45 43.69% and Tanya Shaw 36:43 with W40 42.22%. In the Southport parkrun the Wesham tourists took part in one of the region’s largest runs, clocking 19:48 for M35 67.42%. Sean Murray ran an excellent 19:50 for M35 66.89% for a best time as a First Timer, and Vicky Gore clocked a very good 24:47 with W40 63.01%. Megan Gore produced a JW11 44.86% with a time of 38:18. In the South Manchester run Tracey Hulme ran 24:42 for W55 73.28%; and in Preston Steve Abbott ran the 4th fastest time of the morning with a good 18:10 just outside his personal best with an M40 grade of 76.24%. Steve Myerscough is getting back to good form and he ran 21:18 for M45 66.59%, and Robert Brown recorded 26:17 with M60 61.57%. Paul Carter ran 28:35 for M45 51.20%. In the Riverside run in Chester-le-Street Emma Brook ran 29:32 for a W35 grade of 50.79% and in Lancaster’s Williamson Park Emma Lund recorded 22:56 for W35 65.19%. In Blackpool’s Stanley Park Rob Wallace ran 22:38 with a grade of 57.00%; Dave Marsland clocked 22:44 with M60 72.43%; Finlay McCalman 26:31 with an M50 grade 57.95%; Andrew Moore ran 27:32 for M55 56.78; Tanya Barlow 27:50 with W45 58.20%; Dave Young ran 28:57 for M70 61.66%; and Keith Wilding a First Timer 29:14 with M60 55.36%. Along the Fleetwood Promenade in a small turnout Mark Renshall was second fastest of the day with 19:28 for a new best time and an M45 grade of 72.86%. Martin Bates ran 22:33 a good time for M60 72.36%; Suzanne Leonard 23:39 for W45 69.20%; and George Kennedy also ran 23:39 for an M60 grade of 68.43%.
