James Mulvany strides out in the Mid Lancs in Townley Park Burnley
January swung into dull action for athletic with more cross country and the first local road races of the year.
The Mid Lancs Cross Country League continued with its fourth fixture in Townley Park Burnley. In the Senior Ladies 6km shorter this year featuring only one small, one medium and one large lap Kath Hoyer finished 4th W55 and 68th in 26:18 with a good effort. Jenn Thompson was 27th W35 and 88th overall in 27:55; Kerry Eccles 11th W55 and 105th in 28:54; and Anne Berry was 14th W55 and 125th in 30:42. This gave the Wesham women’s team 24th place; 13th in the W35s; 7th W45 and 4th W55 team. This placed them 4th in Division 2 overall; 17th W35; 13th W45 and 6th W55 teams. Dave Waywell was 6th M70 over the same 6km course in 30:16. The Senior men’s 10km 3-lap course saw 8 Wesham members running; James Mulvany was 34th with a strong run in 36:06; David Taylor was 48th in 36:57 after his early morning parkrun warm-up; Steve Myerscough finished 97th and 25th M40 in 40:28; John Collier cam in 7th M60 and 151st in 43:06; Martin Bates was 17th M60 and 198th in 46:56; Ben Wrigley worked strongly to gain 209th place in 48:26; Dave Marsland was 20th M60 and 214th in 49:08; and Russell Mabbett finished 54th M50 and 222nd in 51:40. The Wesham men were 18th team; 13th M40; 12th M50; and 3rd M60 team. They are standing 3rd overall in the Division 2 standings; 2nd in M40 Division 2; 14th M50s; and 6th M60 team.

The Garstang 10k continued the Wesham Club Championship and as usual was a very popular road racing event with 447 runners. Paul Hetherington was first in for Wesham in 19th place with 38:10 for 2nd M40. Carl Groome finished 32nd and 4th M45 in 39:49; Andrew Harling was 40th with 41:14, 7th M35. The Wesham men were the winning team with a good show of strength. Helen Lawrenson was 4th woman and 2nd W45 in 42:39, 67th overall; Gemma Owen was 23rd woman and 139th in 47:31; and Vicky Gore placed 56th and 244th overall in 53:34. Neil Gregson finished 126th in 46:41; Alan Hudson was 4th M65 and 163rd in 48:52; Ben Wrigley was 184th with 49:50; Phil Leaver 7th M60 and 209th in 51:11; Dave Young 3rd M70 and 220th with 51:44; Rob Danson Snr 19th M50 and 257th in 54:00; Paul Carter 258th in 54:09; Pauline Eccleston 67th and 266th with 54:52; Kay Twist 70th and 269th for 55:06; Sue Rigby 123rd and 353rd in 61:20; and Jennifer Woodman finished 170th woman and 413th in 67:42.
In the East Lancashire Hospice 10k in Great Harwood Peter Cruse finished 1st M55 and 52nd in a time of 43:01. Kath Hoyer was 23rd woman and 2nd W55 in 49:22, 145th overall. There were 534 runners in this popular event.
There was a good turnout of Wesham members at the Lytham Hall parkrun on Saturday. Carl Groome led the way with the fastest time, 4th fastest overall of the morning with a fine 19:17 for an age graded performance of M45 75.89%. Andrew Harling ran 20:01 for M35 66.69% and Stuart Topping 23:23 for M45 61.58%. Phil Leaver recorded 23:54 for M60 69:53 and Sharon Cooper 24:42 for W40 63.70%. Andrew Moore clocked 27:47 for M55 55.79% and Sue Rigby n excellent run with 28:42 for W40 54.82%. Stephen Twist ran 29:33 for M50 50.31%; Debbie Bell 29:37 for W40 53.12%; Madeleine Azzopardi 29:54 for W35 50.33% with Ryan Azzopardi 29:55; and Julie Topping 33:51 for W45 47.86%. In the Preston run David Taylor ran 20:10 after a conservative start for 64.30%; Gemma Owen 23:32 for W35 63.95%; and Elizabeth Johnson 27:43 for W35 54.60%. Graham Cunliffe clocked 32:01 in the Hyndburn event for M60 50.55%. In Halifax the travelling Gores notched up their 80th parkrun venue on a hilly course in Shroggs Park, with Vicky running 27:20 for W40 67.71%; Megan JW11 46.46% with 35:58 and Steven running 35:49. Emma Lund took on Williamson Park in Lancaster for her 9th run here with 23:51 for 62.47%, while in Blackpool Helen Lawrenson was again the fastest woman of the morning with 22:03 for W45 74.23%; Mark Renshall clocked 23:01 for M40 61.12%; Dave Young 26:20 for M70 66.96%; Sara Ward 26:29 and W50 64.88%; George Kennedy 27:12 and M60 58.95%; Tanya Barlow 27:14 for W45 58.87%; and Dave Marsland 28:15 and M60 57.76%.
