There was a scarcity of races last week and thus local runners were treated to a week of rest or training.
John Bertenshaw ran in the final Sale Sizzler 5k race in the 2017 series, and he finished 188th in a top class field with a time of 19:52, a great performance from him to place 3rd M60.
Catherine Carrdus was the only runner from Lytham, and she finished 7th woman and 1st W45 in 18:33, 119th overall.
The Birchwood 10k was the most popular race in the North West region this week with nearly 1000 runners on Sunday but it has lost its appeal to many runners as over the years the route has been forced off the roads onto pavements and byways and now fails to attract runners from the Fylde. The winning time was fast at 31:38 with a margin of 1min 18sec and the first 30 finishers were under 38 minutes. The winning woman finished in 36:47 30 seconds ahead of second place with both runners 2 minutes ahead of 3rd place.
The Burnsall 10 mile race running through Grassington is a tough 10-mile race and was won in 57:33 with just two runners under the hour. The leading woman was 6th in 1:03:54. The road race is followed by the short and sharp Burnsall Classic Fell Race (1.5 miles, 899ft climb) for those who fancy the double. The fell race was won in 14:28 (16:52 leading woman). There were 120 in the road race and 129 in the fell race. There is a village fair on the same day and the races are very much a part of this.
The Darwen Gala Fell Race attracted just 66 runners, 4.7 miles and 928ft of ascent up to Darwen Tower, and was won in 26:58 (36:58 for the first woman finisher).

In The Workington parkrun on the north west Cumbrian coast the travelling Gores were in action, with Steven clocking 20:08 for M35 65.89%; Megan Gore JW10 46.23% with a time of 36:55 with Vicky Gore given the time of 38:16, which looks like a mistake in the results. In the Blackpool parkrun Peter Cruse ran 19:51 for M55 77.41%; Helen Lawrenson ran the women’s fastest time of the day with 20:59 for W45 77.20%.
