March is the season of the 20-Mile distance and the Trimpell 20 in Lancaster has now reached 20 in its consistent history. A quality event over this now diminishing calendar of events this race is popular with Fylde runners in marathon training for the spring season of 26.2-mile events. Wesham’s Steve Littler has made a remarkable recovery over the past two to three years from a back injury, and on Sunday he showed his indominable spirit to finish 4th in the race and 1st M45 in an excellent time of 1:53:24. Simon Denye is another club member who has made an excellent return to running and he finished 17th in 2:07:36 to claim 3rd M45 slot. Rob Wallace came in 138th with a measured run of 2:44:21 with a quality performance.
The Podium 5k Series has started up for 2020 in Barrowford near Nelson. The “A” race was a hight standard with times ranging from 14:30 to 19:30 (81 runners). Wesham’s Lee Barlow took part in the “B” race, finishing 11th in 18:12, a good result.
Three Wesham members ran in the Bolton 10k in Leverhulme Park on Sunday, now one of the last athletics fixtures allowed to go ahead before the government advised event organisers to consider postponing or cancelling their events to avoid mass gatherings. Martin Bates finished 88th and 5th M60 in 22:47; with Sharlan Butcher 36th woman, 5th W45 and 141st overall in 26:25. Dawn Biggs was 44th woman and 4th W50 in 27:12, 154th overall. There were 215 runners in total.
Kath Hoyer joined up with three ladies from Clayton-le-Moors Harriers to run the Worsthorne with Hurstwood Runners 10k Trail Relay, in Worsthorne in East Lancashire on Saturday, a 4 x 10k trail circuit up on to the Pennine moors around Hurstwood Reservoir. She ran 58:31 on Stage 1 with Angela Shian (W40) on stage 2 clocking 58:34. Vicky Heys (W45) then took over on Stage 3 and completed in 1:02:58, with Irene Roche (W60) coming home in 57:07 over Stage 4 to give the team (Dolly Mixtures) 23rd place with a cumulative time of 3:57:10 to win the Female Vets category.
On the last weekend of parkrun for at least the remainder of March 8 Wesham members ran in the Lytham Hall event on Saturday morning at 9am. Ian Nichols Hogg ran 21:30 very close to his personal best for an age graded performance of 60.00%. Jonathan Lawson clocked 21:54 for a n M50 grade of 68.42% and Sharon Cooper ran 23:37 for W45 running flush of 67.89%. Andrew Moore returned 25:09 with M55 62.69%; Ryan Azzopardi 25:09 also for M40 54.27%; Kirsty Holland a swift 25:40 with W30 57.66%; Mark Holton ran just behind son Nicholas for 33:17 with M40 41.31% and Louise Lord clocked 58:31 as volunteer tail walker. In the South Manchester run Tracey Hulme clocked 24:27 for W55 75.05% while in Preston’s Avenham Park Nigel Shepherd busted a gut to try and come in under 21 minutes over the 3-lap hilly course and returned 21:03 for M60 76.88%, a high age standard. Stuart Clayton ran 23:07 for M50 64.82% and Linda Cartwright clocked 33:54 for W45 48.87%. On the challenging Hyndburn undulating course in Clayton-le-Moors David Taylor recorded the second fastest the of the day with a new personal; best of 18:56 for this event with an age grade of 68.93%. Steven Gore ran the 5th fastest time with 20:32 also a new best time with M35 65.50%. Vicky Gore ran 28:27 for a W40 grade 55:30 and Sue Rigby 38:42 for W45 41.43. Carl Groome edged round following a foot operation a few weeks back to clock 46:41, a mild M50 31.85%. James Mulvany was 3rd fastest at the Fell Foot parkrun in Newby Bridge as he prepares to transfer from Wesham to Kendal AC, recording a swift 18:40 for M40 74.20%. there were 8 Wesham members in Blackpool’s Stanley Park, with Lee Barlow warming up for the Podium race with 20:15 for M45 71.69%. Dave Marsland ran 22:41 for M60 73.25%, while Suzanne Leonard ran a new personal best of 22:53 for a W45 grade 72.40%. Stephen Browne recorded 23:31 for M50 64.78 with George Kennedy 23:42 for M60 68.85%. Veronica Walker crossed the line in 26:29 for a new best with an age grade of 56.14%. Finlay McCalman returned 26:54 for M55 57.13% and Dave Young M70 65.28% with a time of 27:42. Along Fleetwood Promenade Peter Cruse ran 22:22 for M55 69.90%; Martin Bates 24:41 with M60 66.71%; Graham Cunliffe clocked a good 28:38 for M60 57.51%; Brian Jones 28:44 with M55 54.87%; and Kim McGuire 31:17 with W60 62.01%.
