Steve Abbott clocks a good Power of 5k; watch this space next week!

It was the near-finale of the winter cross country season with the English National cross country staged by the Midland region in Wollaton Park in Nottingham. Wesham fielded just three runners in the Senior Men’s 12k of a small, medium, large and extra-large lap. Over a very varied course with many challenges including three tree trunks to jump over Andrew Harling managed the best performance finishing 654th in 57:07; Steve Myerscough came off a night shift on the railway a little further south and he ran 1:07:05 to finish a creditable 1267th.  Men’s Captain John Collier soldiered round with a good run to finish 1433rd in 1:11:26. There are three main fixtures left in the cross country season; Lancaster Rylands Park this Saturday in the Mid Lancs League; Wesham top runner Rob Danson runs for the Lancashire County in Loughborough next week, and the weekend after sees the British Masters competing in their championships on a new venue on the Rhug Estate near Corwen in North Wales. The Mid Lancs Cross Country presentation night will be held at the end of April at the Blackburn football ground.

The Lostock 6 race on Sunday morning in fortunately the best conditions seen for some while Wesham staged the next round of its road running championships for 2020. Steve Littler notched up another quality run coming in 5th place for 1st M45 and first master overall in 33:11. Alek Walker finished 40th with his best run to date with a new time of 38:01. Sue Coulthurst had a great run to finish 1st W50 and 13th woman in 42:43, a round 100th overall. New club chair Peter Rooney was 196th and 11th M60 in 47:53 and Kay Twist 200th and 5th W50 in 48:02. Stuart Topping provided the pacing for Tanya Shaw as the pair finished 203rd and 204th in 48:06 and 48:07. Stephen Twist was 216th with 48:49 and Louise Lord 248th with 50:34. Veronica Walker finished 271st in 51:40; Sharlan Butcher 309th in 54:10; Kerry Eccles 326th and 5th W55 in 55:00; Dawn Biggs 338th with 55:21; and Susan Hopcroft 445th in 1:11:27.

Blackpool Stanley Park 10K (Day 1) Neil Harrison 7th and 3rd M35 in 38:01; Paul Boustead 59th 47:53; 13th M35. On Sunday in Race 2 Alan Hudson was 54th in 46:50, 1st M70, and Kath Hoyer was 1st W60 in 50:17, 93rd overall.

Kath Hoyer had run the Standish Hall Trail race on Saturday, where she finished 13th woman and 2nd W60 in 55:05 on the undulating two-lap course to place 103rd overall in the 280 competitors.

Emma Wright ran the Canalathon 20 miler along the Rochdale Canal from Manchester to Sowerby Bridge along the muddy and wet tow path, finishing 53rd woman 28th W40 in 3:49:34, 133rd overall and a tremendous achievement in challenging conditions.

Steve Abbott had run an impressive 17:509 at the Power of 5k at Lancaster Salt Ayre in January. The February event was this Friday, results next week.

Regular parkrunner Jonathan Lawson was the first Wesham finisher in the Lytham Hall run on Saturday morning amidst the last of the spring snowdrops on a damp and breezy morning, completing the 4-lap 5km course in 22:05 for an M50 age graded performance of 67.85%. Ian Nichols Hogg ran 22:13 for an SM25 58.06% while Sharon Cooper scored a W45 65.44% with her time of 24:30. Phil Leaver ran 27:42 for M65 61.13% and Peter Bartlett clocked 28:44 for an M70 grade of 62.12%. Julie Rooney ran 32:46 for W45 48.47% ahead of a run over the new 3-lap course the next afternoon in gorgeous conditions. Mark Holton ran 33:20 with son Nicholas (33:15) for M40 41.25% with Sue Rigby recording 33:55 for W45 47.27%. Preston parkrun was on again having been cancelled the previous weekend with a flooded course, with Steve Abbott running 18:21 for 5th fastest time of the day with an M40 76.11%. Alek Walker recorded 19:31 as a First Timer for 67.98%, and Nigel Shepherd 21:40 for M60 74.69%. Robert Brown ran 26:16 with M60 62.12%; PaulCarter 31:01 with M50 47:56; and Lynn Brown 32:37 for W55 57.84%. In the Northallerton run David Taylor ran the fastest time of the day with 19:32 for an age grade 66.81%. Steven Gore had the 3rd fastest time of 21:20 for M35 53.05% and Vicky Gore 29:59 for W40 52.47%. In the Blackpool run Dave Marsland ran 22:49 for M60 72.83%; Stephen Browne 23:29 with M50 64.87%; Suzanne Leonard 23:51 with W45 69.46% with George Kennedy for M60 68.41%; Rob Wallace ran 24:25 for M25 52.83%; Andrew Moore 25:57 with M55 60.76%; and Finlay McCalman ran 27:52 with M55 55.14%. On Fleetwood Promenade Peter Cruse ran 24:55 for M55 62.74%; Kim McGuire 33:10 with W60 58.49%; and Graham Cunliffe 36:41 with M60 44.89%. Finally, in the Alexandra Park in Moss Side Martin Bates clocked 22:45 for M60 72.38%.
