Garry Barnett in great form

It was a quieter week for athletics in the North West, with the local clubs preparing for the fifth round of the Inter Club Grand Prix at Wesham this Monday evening. On a glorious summer evening there was another large turnout of runners; Rob Danson notched up another win for a continuing clean sweep with a battle for second with Weshamโ€™s Joe Monk relinquishing for 3rd place. The womenโ€™s race was thrown wide open and Wesham came through for a team win, with the open team taking 2nd as the competition hots up into the final two races. Full results and report nest week.


It was a damp start to the fifth Elswick Express 10 mile race on Saturday morning but there was a good entry and after running the course first as a warm up the two Robs Affleck and Danson ran as a fast workout, with the Wesham man Danson finishing 2nd in 55:09 just 4 seconds adrift. David Taylor was 6th in 59:59 with Garry Barnett 10th and 2nd M50 in 62:05. Helen Lawrenson finished 6th woman and 3rd W45 in 1:10:30 in 28th place overall. Martin Bates was 2nd M60 and 49th overall in 1:16:26 with Phil Leaver 3rd M60 and 75th in 1:20:22. Finlay McCalman was 92nd in 1:28:13; and Pauline Eccleston 100th in 1:30:03 with Anne Berry 101st in 1:30:05.


Steve Myerscough was 8th in the 4 mile Caldervale Supper Run on Thursday evening with a time of 25:10 over the hilly country loop. Dave Young finished 1st M65 and 29th in 31:43 with Debbie Myerscough 12th woman and 2nd W50 in 34:18.


The Lancaster 10k took place on Wednesday evening now from the Salt Ayre centre and Alan Taylor finished 94th in 49:49, still a popular race with 231 finishers and a winning time of 34:41.


Daniel Shaw finished 18th in the Scafell Pike Trail Marathon starting out in Keswick, completing the mountainous course in 5:32:03 in a field of 180 finishers.


Carl Groome was the leading Wesham runner in this weekโ€™s parkrun at Lytham Hall, clocking 20:03 for an age graded performance of 72.40% for the M45 age group. John Bertenshaw ran a new personal best in 20:08 for an M60 grade of 80.38%. Ryan Azzopardi recorded a time of 22:23 for M35 59.64% while Ben Wrigley clocked 26:24 for M35 49.94%. Stephen Twist ran 26:41 for M50 55.28% with Kay Twist 26:41 for W45 60.71%. Debbie Bell ran 29:21 for W40 53.61% with Emma Davies 30:00 for 49.33%. Sue Rigby ran 34:11 for W40 45.69%. In the Preston parkrun Steve Myerscough ran 19:54 for M40 70.18% and Robert Brown 25:53 with M60 61.94%. in the Glossop run Vicky Gore clocked 26:40 on the undulating course for W40 57.69% with Megan Gore JW10 47.43% with a time of 35:59 for her 99th parkrun. Steven Gore ran the same time in support. In the Blackpool run James Mulvany was 3rd fastest of the day with 18:07 for M35 74.79%. Nicola Unsworth was the fastest woman of the day with 22:05 with W45 73.36%. George Kennedy ran 22:12 for M55 71.62% and Jonathan Lawson 22:47 with M45 64.23%. Dave Young recorded M65 67.83% with a time of 25:42 and Anne Flanagan ran 28:44 for W60 66.59%.
