The club has had another successful year, and this has been achieved by the club members pulling together and taking on roles and responsibilities. Our membership is in a very healthy position along with our club funds. The club funds are there to improve the club and to move it forward for the benefit of all our members. This year we have achieved this by:
• Investing in members, putting them through coaching courses, this has enabled our Wednesday night structured training and couch to 5K courses to grow.
• Having one of the lowest membership fees in the North West, making our club affordable for all.
• Subsidizing various activities, such as; o the training night venue, o annual presentation night o supporting club running events which is decided on merit (cross country, interclubs, Wittton park relays, to name a few)
• The club has also bought equipment and bibs, and the annual trophies have been upgraded All of which represents money well spent by the club for the members, we have largely been able to facilitate these member benefits through the success of the Wesham 10K.
UNBELIEVEABLE, is the one word I would use to describe our 10K race, and for that I can’t praise the following people enough, thanks must go to Steve Gore, David Taylor and the rest of the race committee. This year the team built on last year’s success, demonstrated through record entries, and an enhanced racing experience with a great HQ and chip timing. Due to its success, a Mid-week Summer 10K was suggested. The idea, was that, this event would be held as a ‘no-frills’ race, emphasis being all about racing and PB potential, so with young Rob Danson drumming up support from some of the fastest legs in the north and with the IT marketing skills of Steve & DT this race is definitely becoming one of the best local quality fields ever assembled with the opportunity for all abilities to gain good times and PB’s! Talking of success, another highlight for me was the amazing take up of the Trail Championship that was introduced for the first time this year. Prior to 2017 only a few hardy souls took part in these running events.
This year saw us taking lots of spoils at many trail races, we took home both category and team prizes, and of course, the event reached its pinnacle at the presentation night where we saw members winning trophies for the very first time. Well done! It’s great to see all the new members who have joined us this year, many graduating from the couch to 5K, and it’s always good to see those returning back from injury, doing what they love best. I would also like to thank the following who have, after long deliberation decided it’s time to give other club members an opportunity to take on a more active role within the club. • Garry Barnett – Men’s Team Captain • Keith Rhead – Chief Marshall • Dave Young – Road Championship Manager Garry – thanks for your commitment and dedication as Men’s captain, rallying support for relay events whether it be on the road (Northern 6 and 12 stages) or the trail (Witton Park relays). You have done an amazing job! Keith – who after nearly 30 years of dedication in his role as chief marshall has done an excellent job ensuring both Wesham interclub and 10K events run smoothly, I’m sure that Keith will pass on his many pearls of wisdom to his successor. Thank you! Dave – who for many years has compiled the results of the selected races that make up the road race championship, in such lightning speed as he knows we runners are impatient and want to know our standings asap. Thank you! Moving into 2018, I can see this being our most exciting year to date, and wish all members a happy and successful year of running. Keep safe. Keep injury free. Keep enjoying and striving for seasonal and personal bests.
