I am a 30-something copywriter and editor, working freelance around our children. We also run a traditional sweet company in the local area. I served in the Army when I was younger, hence the charity Help for Heroes is very close to my heart. I joined WRR to improve my overall fitness and timing and hope to run the NYC Marathon '12, raising funds in aid of HfH

REG CHAPMAN

A long time club member since the mid 1980s, though had a few years in exile in Oldham and Royton Harriers. Noted in the club as always the first into winter thermals, the last out and rarely seen running in a vest. (Who said Yorkshiremen are hardy?)

Is an active member of the Wrinkly establishment for running and holidays indicating he is now well past his best. In his time he claims he could run a bit with a marathon PB of 3:16 and 64 for 10 miles. Now lives quietly in Ansdell since retiring from Blackpool and the Fylde College. Noted as the only Rotherham United season ticket holder this side of the Pennines.

I started running in November 1982 and gave up 40 fags a day, the best move I ever made, my first race was the tough Burnley half marathon in 1983 and I staggered round in 2.04 for 850th place!! Being asthmatic I was just glad to get round. I joined Clayton Le Moors in 1984 and rapidly progressed to PBs of 5k 15.48, 10k 32.13, 10 mile 53.25, half marathon 1.11.13, 20 mile 1.56.09 and Marathon 2.34.28. I have done several Ultra's, the best of which was London to Brighton (54 miles) in 2003 where I was 8th overall in 7.05.12. I have joined Wesham as the club is friendly, well organised and focussed on achieving, I also hope that I can rekindle my desire to do well again after many years of just going through the motions.

(WEBSITE/MAGAZINE EDITOR)

I am the wife of Peter, mother of three  and grandmother of five and now  WRR Web Mistress and WRR Magazine Editor!!!  Don't ever let anyone tell you that you  are "over the hill" at 65 - there's life and more after that!

I took over the position of Web Editor in 2004 from George Flanagan and was a complete novice.  George has always been very supportive.  Since then I have been on a continual learning curve and have accomplished more than I could ever have dreamed of with the development of the WRRWebsite.  It is my "baby" and I love the work and the challenges it brings.  Poor Peter sometimes takes second place if there is new information for the site to be published.

In July 2005 I also took over the Editorship of the Club Newsletter which I have developed into its present form and now call it a Magazine as its content far outweighs the title of 'Newsletter'. This is all down to the contributions by club members. This is another challenge I have enjoyed.  My 'job description' has just added another category as I have now become the Secretary to the Membership Secretary.

As long as there is life in the "old girl" I will continue to do my very best for Wesham Road Runners. In January 2006 I was awarded the title of Hon. Member  which I consider to be the highest accolade for the work I do.

(MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY)

Started running early 1980’s but let it slip because I didn’t have any reason to continue. Started again early 1985 with the ambition of doing the Blackpool 10k Fun Run.  Soon after doing it I ran into a colleague from the past, (Brian Metcalf), who had been running since the mid 70’s and he encouraged me to continue. He also knew that Wesham Road Runners has just been started so we both joined.  This was the beginning of what has been an enjoyable and worthwhile experience. I continued to improve times at all distances peaking around 1990 but since then have slowly deteriorated.

I have now had to give up running and have now joined the Wrinkly Walkers.

Currently the most enjoyable events  are where I walk with others, on the Thursday Wrinkly Runs/Walks, (and Wrinkly Holidays).

Still wanting very much to  be an active part in Wesham RR I have now been given the position of Membership Secretary.  As long as is possible I will always been involved and support WRR in any way I can. It has been a huge part of my life.

I have now been awarded a Life Membership of which I am extremely proud.

(LADIES CAPTAIN)

I took up running in 2006 as a means of losing weight & getting fit then I got hooked and now enjoy the freedom of running outside and not in the gym. I was persuaded by my Personnel Trainer at the gym to join a running club and it was the best thing I did. My first race under the Wesham vest was a Cross Country and it didn't put me off, since then I have made a lot of new friends at the club.

I started running to loose weight as I cannot diet and love all the "bad" foods. Running helped to get down from over 18 stone to my present 12 and a half. Very poor at cross country though do try every now and again. Failed Marathon Runner because of lack of training, bad judge of suitable race pace and lack the bottle to run those all important last few miles. Enjoy 5 miles to half marathon distances on paper my fastest race was the St Annes 5 which I ran in 28.37. My best year was around 2004 a few 36 minute 10k's and a couple of 1.20 half marathons. I have enjoyed the social side to running probably more than the running itself because of the people I have been fortunate to meet. Most of my best friends are runners. There is not many things nicer than running with your friends on a nice Summer evening.

Was introduced to WRR in 2003 by Martin Bates walking his dog one morning. Initially said I'd be no good, as I (then) only ran 3 miles once/twice a week. As the club was on my route home, I decided to go down on Monday nights. Did my first handicapped April 2003 in 34:22. My first race was the Preston Interclub in September (don't remember the time, I think I was around 100th), then the Wesham 10K in Nov 2003 and I finished in just under 44 minutes. I was racing Karl Lee and we have both been improving and competing against each other ever since. Started training from the Vic in Cleveleys on a Wednesday night (Pete Cruse wanted to bin me off because I was too slow!) which was tough at first but eventually I improved, and I started racing regularly, and my times improved that much I did the Wesham 10K in 2004 in 38 minutes. Improved further in 2005, and 2006 has been my most successful year to date, and I got my best times then. Was hitting 5:33 a mile in some Interclubs and 4 mile races. Ran the London Marathon in 2007 and 2008, both under 3 hours, but my post marathon form has never equalled what I have done in 2006. Still waiting for my next purple patch with relish....

BRIAN PORTER

If Brian's running ability were as great as his enthusiasm he would be an international!!

He is a stalwart of our Cross Country team and his reports of the races are "creative" at the very least.

Brian says he enjoys all races or he wouldn't do them. If he had to pick one distance it would be the marathon. Not so much for the gruelling 26 miles, but he thoroughly enjoys the training for a marathon.

He has his own Sports Therapy practice as well as teaching Sports Therapy.

Brian is the organiser of the oldest half marathon in the UK, the Freckleton Half Marathon. He took over a Race Director in 2004 as is proud to be associated with such a prestigious race. The photo shows Brian in the 40th Freckleton Half Marathon in 2004. As you can see, the photographer nearly got a great photo of the houses, until Brian got in the way!!

Three things I always promised myself I would never do, Karaoke, fancy dress and fun runs, "What's funny about running," I used to say.  I wanted to find something else sporty to do which would allow me to continue my passion for calorie intake. I discussed with a number of people and decided to try running.  Am still not a size 6 and will never be but am loving the runs.

SHAUN TURNER

Quite a few years ago now I gave up smoking and decided to go for a healthier life and took up running, nothing very serious, moved over to Preston area and carried on but again nothing too serious.  Going circuit training I got to know Richard Davies better and he suggested I joined WRR, during a pre-race chat with the "fell master".  I commented that I needed a bigger WRR vest.- He replied, "No you need a smaller belly."  Hence I am running more now, especially as Ruth and most others seem to agree with Richard!!!!

Started running in 2001 after spending 12 months in the gym, following 30+ years of excessive socialising !!! Saw a leaflet on the wall for the Wesham 10k and the rest as they say is history.  Got talking to Martin at the Lancaster Half who told me about the  club meeting on a Monday and just turned up, the following week I was a member.

Hopefully I am now a useful member of what is the best organisation I have ever been a part of.  See me with your standards when you reach your goal. Just look for the  trousers !!!

I am married with three children. I work for Mars Chocolate so usually have a boot full of chocolate. I started running about a couple of years ago, entered my first race last year, since then I have got the bug. Done 2 half marathons this year but my biggest achievement so far is running the London Marathon which I found very hard but a fantastic experience.

I started running with WRR last year. I never really did much in the way of running in the past. I always saw it as way to much hard work, and to be honest, the silly small shorts put me off a bit. But When I Started at HBS accountants I met Peter and he convinced me to give WRR a try, and so I did, I enjoyed to atmosphere immensely, I signed up and never regretted it. I am however a summer runner, I love running around Treales with the sun on my back. I will never agree to wear the small shorts, but I have gained a whole new attitude towards running.

P.S. my website is www.grundies.co.uk

I'm a retired Fire Service Officer. I have been running seriously! for almost 30 years. Joined Wesham Road Runners in 1985 as a founder member; this has enabled me to meet many, many superb people over the years, who I can call my friends. As for the Club, it goes from strength to strength; long may it do so.

DAVE  YOUNG

(VICE CHAIRPERSON)

Joined Wesham: 1991.

Dave has been Chairman and Cross Country Captain and excelled at both. If I can quote Peter Cruse to sum up Dave (at a recent Cross Country fixture)….Dave was taking names and Pete arrived and Dave said, “Are you running or spectating?” Peter came to us from North Fylde and this is the environment he craves (no pressure, if you can run, great, if you can’t, thanks for coming to support)

But there’s more to Dave than that! He’s organised Theatre trips and Commonwealth Games trips and once even promoted Wesham RR on the radio!

Dave also gets together the      Club Road Race Championship Competition (no small feat) which in my opinion is a big factor in the Club’s success. In some races Wesham have made up a fifth of the field (the Lakes courses being our favourite!). We had the first four at one memorable race. Talk about unsung hero (forgive the theatre pun) and that says it all.
