THURSDAY WRINKLY RUNS

                       (How it all started)

In the early 1990’s, three past members and myself, thought it would be a good idea to meet up every Thursday each week to go on a training run. The three past members were Earl Smith, Keith Watkins and Bernard Yarwood. (How many of you still remember them?) I’m sure that Bernard will be looking down on us, from that great highway in the sky, proud of what the club has achieved since he passed away.

In the early days most of the runs were just around the Fylde, only occasionally venturing out to the Garstang area.

At the same time as we four were meeting up on Thursday’s, another group of four namely Brian Wilkinson, Keith Gresty, Doug Brown and Les Ward, were meeting up on Tuesday each week, for a run in the hills, mainly on the Lakes and North Yorkshire fells.

Whilst we are on the subject of fells, here is a question for you, which is the most southerly fell in the UK? Answer at the end of this report, you may be surprised!

Towards the end of the 1990’s the two groups decided to meet up together each Thursday. It was at these early stages that that we started to venture further afield.

At the turn of the Millennium the group had grown and was regularly turning out with a dozen or more runners, each Thursday. We were covering distances of anything between 8 and 12 miles, taking in most parts of Lancashire and the South Lakes.

As the years passed, walkers began joining the group at the venues, to go for a stroll in the countryside. It is now not uncommon to see 30 or more people attending each Thursday.

It is now 2008, the lengths of the runs are not quite as ambitious, but we still keep them to 7+ miles. People from other Clubs regularly join us and are always welcome, many of us are retired, but you don’t have to be old and wrinkly just join in.

In the past year we have ventured into the West Lancashire area around Parbold & Mawdsley, no doubt we will be returning there in 2009.

All the best in running, keep injury free during 2009.

PS The answer to the most southerly fell question is “Longridge Fell” how many of you got that right? The others are moors, tors, pikes and hills etc.
