“Team Wrinkly”

Three Monthly Report

June, July, August 2007

Did the long-range weather forecasters get it slightly wrong? Roundabout Christmas 2006, they told us that 2007 would be the hottest and driest summer on record. Silly me believed them!!!Then we were told by some of the highest-ranking Churchmen, that all the floods and devastation was God’s way of punishing us for all our sins and wrongdoings. Logic has never been one of my strong points, but surely he should be punishing the people with all the wealth, along with the politicians, (the people who are guiding us down these paths), not the weak and vulnerable!

Enough of that before I drown in the deep hole that I have dug for myself. (There’s a pun there somewhere).

During the past three months we have seen Tony Robbins and Dougie Brown, go from being classed as “Wrinkly’” and progressing into the “Oven Ready” category. Hope I look that good when, (if), I’m 70.

Another great celebration saw Anne Docherty becoming an official member of the “Wrinkly Club” by passing her 50th Birthday.

Congratulations to you all.

JUNE

One of our first Thursday Runs in June took us to the Calderbank Country Lodge; there is always a great welcome there from Roland and Lesley his wife, the owners of the Lodge. After our super Xmas Lunch there last year, it gave us the opportunity to book the Lodge again for 2007. This time it will be held on Thursday 13th December. http://www.calderbankcountrylodge.co.uk

On the third Thursday in June it was the ever-popular “Fairy Steps” run from Beetham. Check this link.

http://www.visitcumbria.com/sl/beetham-fairysteps.htm  I’m sure that gap is getting smaller.

The last Thursday saw us on an 8.5mile run from the Boss’s home, then back for a well-earned Barbie & Beer. No wonder that gap at the previous venue is getting smaller!

June turned out to be the wettest June since 1903.

JULY

What a disaster, no more smoking in “Public Places”.

On the first Thursday in July we ran along the Ribble Way from the “Aspinal Arms” at Mitton nr. Whalley. http://www.aspinallarms.co.uk/

It’s owned by http://www.copperdragon.uk.com and their “Golden Pippin” beer, has got to be one of the best pints ever brewed. We all thought that there couldn’t be any more rain left in the sky, but guess what, July and the weather got even worse. The fields were now wetter than they were in January and February.

The second Thursday in July saw us at Claylands Caravan Park, Cabus Nr. Garstang http://www.claylands-caravan-park.co.uk which is an excellent venue for running around Scorton and Nicky Nook; super countryside on our doorstep, check this web site:-

The third Thursday in July and we all report for duty, at Doug & Dorothy Brown’s at Hurst Green. This has got to be in the top three when it comes to favourite venues. Doug always ensures that the run is tough but scenic, whilst Dorothy ensures that we are suitably refreshed when we return. The weather was hot and humid, the fields showing no sign of improvement; they were still ankle deep in mud.

The following Thursday and we meet at another top three contender, it’s the Great House Barn Café at Rivington, http://www.bolton.org.uk/rivington.html There are many variations on routes from including, fell, trail and road - it is a runners paradise!

AUGUST

At last the summer improves weather wise. Our first outing of the month is to Clough Head Car Park at Haslingden; on a humid day we set off on 7miles of the Rossendale Way; it is all very scenic and surprisingly dry after all the rain of the previous months.

The second Thursday, the day after the Chorley Inter Club it sees us at the Eagle & Child Pub at Weeton, 8.4 miles and we only went off course three times, that’s got to be a Wrinkly record!

The next run was from the Royal Arms, Tockholes, and another excellent venue; there are numerous different routes that can be taken from here; on this occasion we ran through Roddlesworth Woods then past the bottom of Aggie’s Staircase:

 - http://archive.thisislancashire.co.uk/1997/8/23/820373.html  I once bet Keith Gresty 10p, that he couldn’t run all the way up it, guess what he did!!!! He however declined my double or nothing bet on this occasion. [Times have changed]

The third Thursday saw us running from the Green Drive 5 - start and finish in Lytham, after which there was food and drink waiting for us at Reg and Pam Chapman’s house; what a super spread they had laid on. These Thursday’s are really tough, you know!

The final August run was from the Roman Village of Ribchester, http://www.ribchestermuseum.org/ The run was the longest this year, 10.5miles. I told the other runners that it would be around 6 to 7 miles; now they know why I was on the Navigation Course that night! (Hopefully I won’t have learnt anything; it will take the fun and mystery out of the runs}. On this occasion we were only slightly off course, a gauge of how far can be seen in the fact that we ran round Blackburn Rovers Training Ground at Brockhole, - (please don’t tell anyone at Turf Moor!)

Despite all the rain this summer we have had some excellent outings. Here’s to Autumn etc.
