MARTIN’S 50th BIRTHDAY PARTY

held at the

Norcross social club

on

SATURDAY, 4th NOVEMBER 2006

As we all know, Martin reached his half century on the 2nd November.  To mark this occasion he threw a party at the Norcross Social Club on Saturday, 4th November, and, being the nature of the man, generously invited everyone at Wesham Road Runners, along with his other friends and relatives, to help him celebrate this significant event.

The party was a huge success and I, for one, thoroughly enjoyed it.  The meal provided was a delicious hot pot with red cabbage followed by a piece of Martin’s Birthday Cake.  The cake was an extremely clever model of the Wesham Vest, which Martin wears with pride.

At first it took a while for the DJ to encourage partygoers to dance. We were all catching up, discussing recent events.  Eventually though, the younger, and fitter, members took to the floor and literally danced the night away.

At an appropriate moment in the evening we all sang the traditional “Happy Birthday” and Martin was encouraged to make a speech. Now, our Martin can “write for England, but I think the ‘cat got his tongue’ on this occasion. He did, however, manage to thank everyone for their cards, gifts and, of course, for coming to celebrate with him.

The Wrinkly group sat together and, I might add, such was the sentiment of the evening that I caught Boss Wrinkly giving Pam a hug or two – aahhh, that’s nice! Also enjoying the evening was Levon, Martin’s son, who was thoroughly enjoying himself with another little chap about the same age. Levon looked really proud of his Dad.

Now, I’ve not known Martin that long but, from what I do know, I am proud to be classed as one of his friends. Those of you who access this website know how dedicated Martin is and how reliable he is in supplying his reports and photographs.  He takes his club very seriously indeed.  I know for a fact that Martin has selflessly used his own personal finances to promote WRR.  Like myself, he feels that if it’s worth doing, he’ll do whatever it takes to get it done.

For a large part of the time I have known Martin he has had his arm in plaster. This seemed to me to be a permanent fixture at one point! Never daunted though and never to be put off running, Martin bounced back at the first opportunity. He has, of course, a wonderful, supportive partner in Michaela and you could almost class them as a couple of bookends – each one needing and complimenting the other. Another very important person in Martin’s life is his son, Levon, who is always by his dad’s side.  Levon, I’m sure, will be only too keen to jump into Dad’s running shoes, carrying on the running legend.

Martin is held in the greatest and fondest respect by all members of WRR and has contributed so much to making it the club it is today.  May I take this opportunity of congratulating him on reaching his 50th milestone and hope that he has still many more ‘real’ miles to run.  I also would personally like to thank Martin for all the dedication and support given to me towards the WRR Website and WRR Magazine.  A week would not be quite the same without ‘Martin’s Race Ratings’, (as well as changing all the &’s and @’s throughout the report!!!), and, in my book, Martin you score 10 out of 10.

HAPPY 50TH BIRTHDAY MARTIN AND HERE’S TO A GOOD RUNNING YEAR AHEAD.
