MEN’S TEAM CAPTAIN’S REPORT

This new event was a bit of a lottery for all competitors.  With ten events, two competitors per event, and no one allowed to enter more than two events, all three clubs were stretched to put out full teams. So, when you lined up at the start, you could be facing someone like Alex or Trevor, who each won two events…. or someone like me who made up numbers in the javelin. However, everyone enjoyed a sunny evening and, for Wesham Men and Ladies there was plenty to cheer about.  The men had seven victories in ten events.

200m    Graham Ingham

800m    Trevor Raynor

1 Mile   Lee and Steve producing a brilliant 1st and 2nd.

3000m  Karl, winning with pacing provided by Les

Plus a thumping victory for the Glory Boys of the 4 x 400m – Steve, George, Trevor and Alex.

In the field events, unexpected talent was shown by victors in the javelin, (Graham Vickers), and shot put, (Peter Gleaves), who both rolled back the years.

The team of 15 was made up by Mike Owen, (throwing a mean shot), Des Cleary, (with a strong opening event in the 800m), and Martin, (driving through a tough 3000m).  Bringing up the rear was Dave Waywell, (gamely showing how to long jump without actually jumping due to a groin injury sustained on holiday – don’t ask how!), and Reg Chapman, (making up numbers in the javelin and discovering there was someone even worse and so finished an impressive 5th out of six).

A special mention for the whole Ingham family who captured the spirit of the evening with Mum, Dad and daughters competing and son, Jack, (aged 12), performing creditably in the 400m – he is definitely one to watch for the future.

Overall, a great night out and a credit to the organiser.

Wesham men were runaway winners with a trophy to be shared around. Roll on next year!!

PS. I hope I haven’t missed or misrepresented anyone – keeping up to date on who was doing what on the night was not easy.
