Can we have a bell please?

The European Cross Country Championships

This year’s European Cross Country Championships took place in San Giorgio su Legnano in Italy. That’s all I know about the place. John Whiteman will no doubt have been there or is planning to for a Wrinkly Tour. (Sorry for missing you out of my last report John!)

Sadly there were no Wesham representatives in the British squad. I know that is so hard to understand I’ll repeat it: there were no Wesham representatives in the British squad. I believe Capt’n s Young, Russell and Murphy have already lodged a protest!

As well as the absence of our own club, there were a few other things I noticed about this event from my sofa. (Club funds would not extend to me going to Italy to report direct from the course. The committee told me that as I hadn’t been to Burnley or Liverpool they were sure I could write a report without actually being there! They even told me that if I watched on telly it would be considerably closer to the action than I have been all season!)

Anyway, back to my observations:

  • Where were the tents?
  • Where were the wind and the rain? This took place in bright sunshine without a glove, hat or Helly Hansen top in sight!
  • Where was the mud? There’s more mud in my back garden than on that course!
  • Where were the hills? Apart from a little slope, which I think they built for the event, there were no hills at all.
  • Why can’t we have a bell? They had a bell for the start of the final lap. Capt’n s Young, Russell and Murphy, can you write to Dawn please and ask for a bell??

Congratulations to Mo Farrah for becoming the first British man to win the European title for ten years. There was a problem with the computerised results throughout the race which meant the British team were left off. You’d have thought they would have got a decent results service in wouldn’t you? What were Dave Clarke and John Schofield doing today, Christmas shopping???

Not much of a write up I grant you. However, by the time Brenda has finished putting in pictures of John Whiteman, links to the Italian tourist board, music, snow, course maps, (and no doubt loads of other wonderful stuff), it will look brilliant. It will still read like a load of rubbish, but at least it will look good.

See you the Lancashire championships in January, and listen out for the bell!
