I’ve Completed the Wildlife Trust’s Badger Set 2006
Thursday 20th July 2006
When I went to set off to pick up Graham Vickers it seemed as though we wouldn’t
get to the final of these three races – when I tried to start my car nothing
happened! (Turned out to need a new
battery.) Graham’s lovely wife, Louise, came to the rescue and took
us. As previously, we registered and
checked out the prizes. Those of us who
had entered all three races were given a T-shirt and asked to be part of a
group photograph after the race. We said
“Hello”
to other Wesham runners – nine of us
this time, including Julie Cruse on
her first run out in a Wesham vest. Others were Lisa Davenport, Chris Whitlock, Peter Cruse and Steve Myerscough, who had done it
before, plus Martin Bates and Nigel Shepherd experiencing it for the
first time.
It was an extremely warm
evening which made all the uphill sections seem steeper and the course feel
longer than previously! I trudged along
the level sections, speeded up a little on the downhills but must admit to a
lot of walking on the uphills. I still
mince down the steps - haven’t got used to them yet. Did my worst time of the three events;
scraping in ten seconds under an hour, but wasn’t particularly disappointed
given the heat.

After the race, in our race series T-shirts, Graham and I went in with Louise
and other Wesham folk for a brew and
the presentations. The surprise of the
evening was that Julie Cruse, Lisa
Davenport and I won the Ladies Team Prize. We each received a shoe bag and had our photo
taken with the representative of Neales,
the prize sponsors. I have come away from
each of these three events with a prize – raffle at the first one, age category
at the second and now team. Amazing!
This was a very well organised
series of races with good prizes and a great atmosphere, which hopefully will
be repeated next year. I think I heard
the organiser say she might be persuaded to put a race on in the autumn. I certainly intend to participate in future
events and hope others will come along too.
