Where have all the Flowers gone?

It wasn't that long ago that we ladies of Wesham often cleared up winning many, many prizes, (Coniston being a memorable one twice!), just because we had strength in numbers. Even if some of us weren't in the top three and in the prizes, we've become famous during the past 5 years or so for our sea of blue vests on the start line or a streak of blue vests during a race. We were always in presence whether just running for the fun of it, with a fellow club member or going for a PB, like the more serious of us. Of course our male members are included in this equation and they are by ratio the majority of our members. But what in recent times has happened to our flowers? Where have they all gone?

Clubs are a very transient commodity and people come and go, but even the core of our ladies seem to have become disjointed or gone into hiding where races are concerned. Where are you all? I don't envy our Captain’s their jobs and I couldn't find the time to do the job myself, but racing's our game at Wesham and, for the past few races that I've done, bar a couple, (and I know I controversially do more than most), we noticeably haven't even had a second or at least a third lady to make up a team or, if we have, that's been it. Maybe after all the festivities we can again show other clubs what we're truly made of. Come out of hiding and pass on our racing legacy to our newer and newest lady members? Maybe we need a 'social' to get us all together and muster up the troops as we are out there; we're just not visible at the moment! Is it the flu perchance?

These were my thoughts as I was running round Skippool Creek, in freezing fog and ice on a frosty Yuletide morning, with not enough clothing on and I thought I'd put pen to paper and air them. Anyway, I wish all a happy new year and I'll see you all at the races!
