Kelly was racing first at 3:40 and we watched her out of
transition and onto the muddy field for her three laps on the bike. I was
starting to get worried as it looked hard peddling around the mucky field. I
had to go and get ready then for my race so I missed Kelly’s run but mum and grandma said she did well and managed her
sprint at the end.
Then it was my turn. Eight
lengths of the pool, not a problem for me as swimming is my strongest
discipline. In transition the lack of space caused me a few problems and I
couldn’t get my bike out of the racks which lost me a lot of time. In my hurry
I put my helmet on the wrong way round which gave Dad a laugh as I rode past him on the first of my five laps. I
found the bike the hardest discipline as the field where we cycled was very wet
and muddy. Then back into transition I passed my bike to the marshal who was
racking them for us and then I went off on my run, five laps on grass around an
astro turf pitch with all the hockey players watching us. It was slippy on the
corners where everyone had been turning. I still managed a slow sprint into the
finish. I WAS SHATTERED!!
After all the groups had finished we were
able to collect our bikes and then go to the presentation where we got a
certificate, a medal and a t-shirt. I finished 6th out of seven girls in my age group and Kelly was 13th out of 17 girls in her group. Then we could go, it
was a long day and we finally got home at seven and had a well deserved Chinese takeaway!
