MESSAGE FROM YOUR MEN’S CAPTAIN

I did not know what I was letting myself in for when my good pals from the Wednesday night gang suggested that I run for captain. Having never tried it before, it was going to be challenging and a real eye opener. I was always one of those runners who turned up every time and run my heart out and then went to the pub for some liquid refreshments and a bite to eat.

The highlight for me this year has been the support from everyone turning out, when ever they could, and running in the Interclub Grand Prix Series. This has been of the highest standard for both the men and women since I started running all those years ago, (1999).The number of Wesham runners at each race seemed to grow and, hopefully, I thanked each and everyone. If I missed anyone I am sorry.

From the start it was always going to be tough; the dates did not do us any favours, always clashing with another race just a few days before. We nearly pulled it off at North Fylde, just narrowly being beaten, by one point, by Preston. If we had not won so many prizes at Coniston I believe we would have probably beaten Preston - we had too many tried legs.

We bounced back at the next two fixtures and won them.  However, we just failed to win the Open Overall Series to a very strong Preston club, led by their number one runner, Adam Sutton but we made it interesting all the same. The Vet 50's and 60's won their categories, which is still a good achievement. We can only hope next year we can go one better and win the Open Series. It will be even harder now that North Fylde & Blackpool have merged, but I know Wesham will rally again in numbers and, with a bit of luck and less injuries, will come out on top.

I am looking forward to the next couple of months, where Wesham will do well in the big local races on the road. Also it’s that time again to get dirty with the start of the cross country season.
