The course runs from Hawkshead South round Esthwaite Water.

MARTIN’S RACE RATINGS:

Do it again:                 Yes

Scenery:                      10. I’ve given other races 10, who perhaps didn’t deserve it, if I can only give Hawkshead 10!!! Great views of Coniston and Pavey Ark.

PB potential:               Don’t even think about it. I had actually told Joanna it was fairly flat (oops!).(Sorry Joanna) But I have run a few races since last year! Having said that I think Lee Barlow got a P.B. a few years ago on this course!

Atmosphere:               10

Organisation:              10

Value:                          10 only £4 for Club runners and no entry on the day surcharge, but…..no barbecue this year as the organisers were quoted £3 a head! Barbeque was promised on the entry form, but we can forgive the organisers under the circumstances!

Beginner Friendly:     10. Some girls came in the Pub claiming to have come last and they loved it!

Kirsty Waywell had offered to look after Levon. Michaela, (glorified babysitter), had been out for a meal tonight, so I was all set. Levon had got his PSP and McDonalds! I met Joanna Goorney at The Fairfield. I had tried to fill the car at the last minute; I phoned Barry Peatfield, Russ Mabbett and Finlay and e –mailed Peter Gleaves. I thought Finlay was wavering at one point, but I think he came down on the side of Gordon Ramsay/Emmerdale.

We made good time. Had time for a kick about with Levon, (that was my warm up). At the start I pointed out top Kendal Lady, Rebecca Robinson in case Joanna was thinking of trying to keep up with her. (She’s run for GB). I had a good start and felt fairly OK despite a Lytham Speed session last night! Fireman Junior was the 1st WRR vest to go past, followed shortly thereafter by a grunting Fireman Senior. I kept George K. in sight all the way round and I was quite pleased. It was boiling and everyone was sweating profusely. I was aware Joanna was behind me and ex Wesham runner, Dave Preston. They both beat me easily at Freck and it spurred me on a bit to make sure I at least kept Dave behind now he’s batting for the other side so to speak - (sorry Dave). I seemed to come good after 4 miles. Zinal gave me a shout here. (Only proper fell runners will understand that reference!) Prior to that I felt my mind wandering a bit and had to shake myself out of it. I could hear a female approaching and I speeded up. I overtook three or four on the last, (flat), mile and had a good finish. I’d run 40:33. A bit down on last year, but I wasn’t downhearted.

I thanked Kirsty and headed back to the car with Levon. He wanted to play football again, but I could hardly move. Thanks to other parkers for not freaking out if the ball came close to their beloved car!

I had to wait ages to stop sweating. Peter Waywell had shot off back to his hotel and let me have his number for a burger for Levon. (We didn’t know yet!). The organiser asked me to pass the word round! I thought I was going to get lynched, but everyone was OK and I think I set a trend after ordering chips. Had a couple of drinks and set off back a different way home, (via Newby Bridge). Perhaps a mistake with hindsight. Levon was feeling sick. I slowed right down and stopped for a short while and he was OK.

Wouldn’t mind camping next year if I can have Levon off school without causing too much of a rumpus.

After Fat Controller’s comments on our Message Board, I’m getting wary about offending local clubs……but disappointed WRR were the only local club represented. This isn’t a dig Crofty! I set off for this race at 5:30p.m. and got there in plenty of time. So come on Blackpool, N.F. and Lytham support a fantastic race. I’ll give you a lift if I’ve a spare seat again!
