INGLEBOROUGH MOUNTAIN RACE 7m/2000’

on

“MY ARSE!”

Saturday, 21st JULY 2007

Scenery:                      8

Atmosphere:               8 - run in conjunction with Ingleton Gala. Loads of stalls for the kids. Levon came away with a few prizes and two coconuts!

Organisation:              8 - apart from having Dave Waywell down as 1st Female Vet 60 everything seemed to go swimmingly. (I wonder if she was skeletal too?) The organisers gave us discretion on whether we wanted to wear our bum bags. Results e-mailed to us by 3 o’clock next day. Joanna received a T-shirt for 2nd LV35.

Value:                          10 - £3 on day only or £10 if you wanted a T-shirt.

Beginner Friendly:     10 - straight up and down route. No navigation worries.

Do it again:                 Yes, although I think Captain Barlow, (if re-elected), would like to have some different races for variety in next year’s Championships.

I’d arranged to pick up my son, Levon, from football training at noon and go round to Steve Littler’s. Linda said she would look after Levon. Lee Barlow rang me at 11am and woke me up – he was asking for a lift in a roundabout sort of way – in a way that only Lee can. We set off in Linda’s car. Lee made out he wasn’t sure if he was going to run or spectate. He proceeded to phone various runners/runners’ wives asking for fell shoes/bum bags etc. The chairman came to the rescue and lent him his spare pair, which was half a size out. Lee had previously had a drunken bet with Chester that he would beat Chester to the top for £10, and beat him back down for another £10!

Michaela travelled to Ingleton via Sweatshop, Chorley. She travelled up with Joanna and Sarah. She phoned from the car park adjacent to the gala field and asked me where the gala field was! A lady who sounded just like Liz Smith, (nana from the Royale Family), was on the microphone announcing various events from when we arrived at about 1:30 till maybe 4pm, (eat your heart out Brian!). She sounded that much like her, I had to get up close to check………wasn’t the last episode sad when she died.

We seemed to have one of the best turnouts there and caused quite a stir amongst the established fell running clubs like Clayton. The Eaton and Waywell, (junior), families were camping over at Dent and then doing Coniston Fell Race on the Sunday. Kirsty is 8 months pregnant!

We set off from the gala field onto the road and one runner went flying straight away, but carried on and finished the race, and then went straight to Otley Hospital, (wouldn’t get that in a namby pamby road race!)

…………..I’m sounding like a seasoned Fell Runner now!

On my warm up, I felt knackered after a hard week – two races and some track work and track races that sap the hell out of your legs. I ran with Simon Eaton for a while, but did a lot of walking when I should have been running. Gary Johnson left me and Simon left me.

The first runner came down on our left – he was flying and must have had a lead of two minutes. Steve Littler was in the top six running down to our right. I also saw Dave Waywell, Gary Pendlebury and Lee Barlow all well up there. I gave them a shout, but doubt they heard me. Must have missed Bogtrotter and Alex.

I was approaching the summit when Joanna Goorney overtook me. We had to run round the shelter and trig point and then down a steep grassy hill. Some walkers were clapping us stood in the mist. Joanna waited for me on the edge………not out of chivalry or out of concern for an old man, but to see how I was going to negotiate it as if she had a slight panic. I’d seen runners coming down on their bottom and I thought this was the safest bet. I could hear Sarah Sherratt approaching behind. She seemed to have a nervous laugh. She also left me for dead and looked to be going great guns. Has Sarah found her niche? Mark Midgley also came past me, but not quite as graceful as Sarah. (He went flying full length across the path, but soon got up and disappeared into the distance!) I overtook a couple of runners when the path became a bit safer in an effort to salvage some pride!

Only seemed to finish seconds in front of Dempsey! – More or less straight away, Levon wanted to play football! I watched the kids doing the sack race and egg and spoon race.

We headed off to the Marton Arms at Thornton-in-Lonsdale. It’s only a mile north of Ingleton and dates back to the 13th century. I think the front door is the original? Sir Arthur Conan Doyle got married at the church across the road. I ordered an expensive fillet steak as I couldn’t see anything else on the menu I fancied and Levon had a children’s burger and chips (£3.95). Steve and Linda bet him 10p he wouldn’t eat it all, and they won! After I ordered, I saw the Special Board with loads more choices and one of my favourites - Caesar Salad.

Hats off to Chester and Simon for doing two fell races in two days.

Writing this is the most energetic thing I can muster today! But that might be due to the added consequence of going out with Lee Barlow and Pete Cruse last night. Pete and Julie were planning on carrying the Wesham flag to the ‘Northern Boys Love Gravy 6 Mile Trail Race’ on Sunday.
