Twice as many runners as last year – 35 from Wesham. Peter Cruse was hoping to do Salford 10k in the morning as well, but I think the thought of dashing back from Manchester in Bank Holiday traffic put him off; that and the race not being 10k. Or perhaps he realises he’s never going to catch me in the mileage stakes?

I’d just paid my £7 to enter when Chris Moss walked in and offered me his number! The next runner through the door was Finlay “moneybags” McAlman!!……the rich get richer, the poor get poorer!!

With hindsight I think maybe I set off too quickly and a succession of Wesham vests steamed past. I’d had a couple of days rest this week for a change, but I didn’t feel any better for it. I told myself I wasn’t doing too badly as I could still see various runners not too far off, but then I thought, “What if they are having a bad day as well!”

Mike Carter (Hon. Member and first Club Chairman), was marshalling and shouted encouragement, “Well run Dave”

Dave Ward said before the race that I’d beat him today, but he went past with ease. I felt like I was treading water, but the “killer hill” at 8 miles didn’t trouble me at all. Maybe I need an 8 mile warm up? I managed to “escape” Peter Waywell and pass Tony Codling (NF).

Finished in 68:38 (54th) with eleven Wesham runners in front. I was slightly slower than last year. Congratulated Gary de Banke (his first 10 miler!!), and tried to recruit an unattached lady – but she lives in Blackburn and her uncle ran for Accrington, but you never know….nothing ventured.

Decided to head for the Cartford Arms, but it shut at 3pm. Steve Littler had come to watch after finishing 6th in the Southport 4 in the morning and he followed us down. Michaela and I just managed to get a drink, but Steve didn’t bother as he wanted something to eat before he set off for Old Trafford. Had another in the River Wyre and met Russ Mabbett and set the world to rights. (As you do.)
