THE
ANTICS OF MICKY MOLLOY
“Kid Brothers, Eh!”
PART 7
Thursday morning and its absolutely
pouring down, Mick and Sally are sitting in the kitchen
watching the rain bounce off the shed roof, and the pond in the back garden
looks like bubbling water. “What a day eh Micky”, “Your
not kidding I’m not going out in this”. Micky had planned to go and get his club vest from the shop at the
track. But even if he went on the bus he would get soaked. It was about half a
mile walk from the bus stop to the track.
Sally had done all the
washing and housework earlier in the week, so nothing really to do around the
house, she was sure she could have found something, but she wasn’t that
desperate to find work. “Oh come on Micky! Its only water, get your
waterproof on and let’s go to the shopping centre for a coffee”. “Ok
but don’t come near me with that orange umbrella”, he snarled at his
sister.
He still gets stick at school over the last time his big sister came to
his rescue in a downpour. “Right understood, blimmey it’s only an
umbrella”. Completely covered the pair set off and just to add to their
misery, the bus into town zips past the end of the street, “Oh no” cries Sally. “Come on, run,” said Micky, “If anyone is at the bus stop
they can tell the driver to wait”, “Yeah Right”, said Sally, “I’m not running anywhere”.
And as the next bus wasn’t for half an hour, they set off walking, grumbling
most of the way.
They get to the shopping centre and head straight for the coffee bar,
which is packed, but their luck was changing as a table just came free, right
next to a radiator. Both put their coats on the back of the chair and Sally went to order the coffee. “Can
I have one of them with whipped cream and a flake Sal,” “Yeh course you
can, you big kid,” she said, they sat drinking their coffee for over half an
hour, (people watching), which was a favorite pastime of Sally and her friends. By this time, a puddle had formed under each
of their chairs from the raincoats.
They passed the time by picking people out as they passed by and
compared them to an animal, either because of how they walked, dressed, or
looked. This was a favorite pastime of Sally
and her Girlfriends. “Look Sal! Over there, a big chicken pecking
at a tortoise”, Sally laughed
as she watched a very bossy lady drag her husband from one shop window to
another, “Yeh and look at that pair of squirrels in the newsagents.”
spotting to small boys at the pick and mix. This could have continued all day
and probably would have but for a huge west Indian man and his very pretty
daughter entering the coffee bar, “Hi ya Micky,” A smile on Sally’s face as Micky visibly blushed.
“My God I haven’t seen that look for a long time,”
“Shut up Sal!, Hi ya Beth, How you doin’,” “I’m ok, just shopping with Dad,
He’s rubbish on his own”, “Um excuse me young lady, Hi, how are you both,”
“Very well thank you, I’m Sally, Micky’s sister”. “Pleased to meet you, can I
get you both another coffee.” “Yes please,” said Micky, “Very kind of you” said Sally. Micky and Beth got two
more chairs and rearranged the table, while Mr Jerome, got the drinks. Sally
still had a smile all over her face, while Micky
kept giving her a little look as to say, “Behave yourself.”
The group spent a good half hour chatting. Mr Jerome and Sally made
pleasant chat, mostly about the youngsters, Whilst Micky and Beth talked
non stop about the running club, and the up coming track and field meeting.
“Right young lady, this is all very nice, but it‘s not getting the shopping
done.” “Ok Dad, Right then, see you Saturday Micky,” “Yeh definitely, bye Mr
Jerome”, “Yes, nice to meet you both”, said Sally. And when they were out of sight Sally just looked at her little brother. “What?” he said, “What?”
“Oh Nothing,” said Sally,
and the smile came back to her face. “Oh shut up! Come on lets go.” Sally
laughed and they got their coats and went for a walk round town. This turned
into a right battle, with Sally
wanting to look round every bag and shoe shop in Weston, and Micky more
interested in the sport shops and game station shops.
“I’ll meet you back here in half an hour or so” said Micky. “Ok, see you,” said John. As they walked away Sally glanced back at Micky who punched the air and mouthed, “Yes!”
She screwed her face at him, and he just laughed.
Kid brothers eh!!
