Ladies Round Up – March 2007

Well the winter months are almost over, the clocks will be changing and the lighter evenings will be with us soon……giving us much more variety of routes from the club on a Monday night.  Of course the wind, rain and the dark nights haven’t put off the real Wesham ladies who continue to turn out, run as hard and as fast as they can….and, of course, have a bit of a chat en route - a good giggle followed by a cup of tea!!

New Members

A few new ladies have sampled the Wesham hospitality and look enthusiastically to improve their running with goals already in place….  Rachel Gray is not one to tackle easy events, preferring to train for a triathlon!  Rachel is working hard on her running and is keen to further the distance she can run.  Two other new ladies who have signed up for the BUPA Manchester 10K are Heidi Kirby and Adele Brown….and, in a bid to improve their running, have joined Wesham.  Both of these ladies made a debut appearance at the Catforth Canter 5K and did brilliantly. Hopefully by now you will be finding new running partners who will help drag you round the streets and improve your running. If not, just ask anyone at the club and everyone will be willing to offer words of advice, etc.  The good thing for new members is access to the “old”, or rather more experienced members, who are only too happy to share their running tales and point you in the right direction of anything to do with running/training/racing that you are unsure about.

Competitive Miles

Every mile still counts…..!!  Although there are a few main contenders this year – please be aware that every race you enter is being recorded by our Competitive Mile Monitor, Richard Davies!!  Each mile you run contributes to a your annual total race mileage – a great way at the end of the year to look back at your races and be amazed at how many miles you have covered in races, let alone your training!   Should you run any races outside of the local vicinity don’t forget to let Richard know to ensure that every mile is counted and recorded!!

Club Standards

Pauline Weller is still holding onto the ladies standard awards and can’t wait to start giving them away!  The times and age categories are listed on the website, www.weshamroadrunners.com/ClubStandards and are well worth checking out. You may be surprised to know that you may have already achieved the times necessary – and if you have, you merely have to let Pauline know and the big award is yours!!  Of course, if you have yet to achieve your standards – it’s a great personal goal to work towards.  There is no pressure to achieve them, but a nice aim for the year.  You’re doing the running and the races anyway so, where possible, go claim that bronze, silver or gold!

Personal Bests

There have been so many great achievements from everyone over the last few months, everyone has been so busy and working so hard it’s great to see!  Below are a couple of times that deserve a special mention……

Joanna Goorney – travelled all the way to Watford to complete a half marathon and recorded a magnificent 1:29….how super is that….?!  Joanna is a top runner and deserves every success. She works hard and justly achieves fantastic times!

Sue Fearon – another well travelled runner who did Brighton half marathon and knocked a whopping 40 minutes of her last half marathon!  I think we all know that to be able to reduce a half marathon time by such a significant time is absolutely down to pure hard work and dedication, so big well done Sue!

Aside of the above couple of hard working star runners, we are currently enjoying every success of our other members, Carmel Sullivan – who is just proving to be a dynamo, Julie Cruse who is back on her famous form recording ever more impressive times each time she wears that Wesham vest – its great to see!!  Sarah Sherratt is another one who is returning to marathon training and it’s nice to see she’s still recording impressive times. Not forgetting though one of the greatest come backs for Wesham ladies is Michaela Dempsey.  Everyone is delighted to see Michaela back running having suffered a long term injury, and, what’s even nicer, is that she’s back at the top leading the way.  Michaela is a true runner, dedicated, fast, enthusiastic and does great – as well as offering wise words of encouragement to other members…watch out everyone…..she’s back…!?

Cross Country

The season has now finished and gets a mention in its own right in the magazine.  However, it can’t go unnoticed that the Wesham ladies have well and truly excelled themselves.  To everyone who has taken part in cross country a massive THANK YOU!!!  You have all done a fantastic job – everyone of you should be justly proud of your achievement and that of your team!  Anyone that has done cross country will tell you its not easy but equally nothing beats cross country in terms of having a fun afternoon and really feeling part of  a team!  I hope you have all enjoyed it – you deserved to – especially those who tackled Lancaster!?!?!!  Fond memories now though - until the next season…..incidentally starting in just seven month’s time!!!!

Inter Club

Summer months brings on the joys of all the local clubs getting together for a run!  For those that haven’t taken part before it’s normally a distance of about 5 miles, each club takes turn to host the runs and the dates are set as follows:

Weds 3rd April 2007, 7.30pm, Lytham

Mon 16th July 2007, 7.30pm, Wesham

Weds 16th May 2007, 7.30pm, Preston

Weds 8th Aug, 7.30pm, Chorley

Weds 13th May 2007, 7.30pm, Blackpool

Weds 5th Sept 2007, 7pm, Red Rose

It’s a great opportunity to run as a representative for your club and every runner counts.  Each finisher, (regardless of your finishing time/position), earns points and at the end of the series points make prizes!!!   It’s also a way of getting to know other runners from other clubs who you can then look out for in other local races, providing someone else to run with or along side at a race when you need that extra push.  Often people stay for a drink afterwards and have a little social.  The top runners provide great competition, everyone enjoys it and its lovely to be out running in those summer evening!  Definitely dates for your diary.  Please do try and support these events, they really are good fun and a fantastic way to improve your running pace! (And it’s free to enter!!!)

Fell Championships

This starts on 22nd April…….Paddy’s Pole!!!!  Not for the faint hearted but definitely for those of us that love great scenery and getting away from the pavements and roads.  These are fantastic races that really offer a challenge!  Fell running offers the opportunity to get lost in a field, run/walk hills that you ordinarily wouldn’t consider, try and run downhill, (not as easy as you think – for those that haven’t tried it!), and yet have a brilliant time in a race that is generally more relaxed and often smaller in numbers than a road race and cheaper too!  The climbing is challenging but a real achievement and you do really appreciate crossing that finishing line!    Again, more details including dates and times of the races are available on the website and in the Forthcoming Events section of this magazine.

This is the first year of the fell championships so it’s a case of lets get out there and see!  Helen Jolly is probably one of the most enthusiastic lady fell runners we have – certainly one that prefers the fells to the roads.  That said, Helen is suffering with an injury at the moment, so ‘big hope’ you get better soon Helen – we need you back to lead the way!!

Marathon Runners

Good luck to all those training and competing for either London and/or Windermere marathons……Helen Briggs and Carmel Sullivan are doing London, Sarah Sherratt and Julie Cruse will be at Windermere – lots of luck ladies! (Helen hopes the fund raising is going well, for those that want to sponsor Helen there is a link on the website home page).  Those doing London we will be looking out for you on the TV!

Good luck to you all, hope the training is going well and may you have lots of fun on the day….!

Nights Out

Following a successful night out organised by Captain Murphy in Poulton which involved eating and then doing a little bit of drinking/dancing afterwards. It has been agreed another little ladies night is needed!!!  So, post marathons, a night out will be organised.  It is hard choosing a night where no one is getting up to run the next day but I’m sure Julie will do her best to provide us with a date and venue where everyone is welcome to come out and have a bit of knees up!

So, let’s enjoy the spring, the lighter evenings and lots of running…!!
