Ladies Round Up – June 2007

Well the summer evenings are here; the lighter nights make it easier for running and the ladies have proven their prowess at club nights, races and events over the last three months…………….

New Members

Welcome to Bernie Ashworth and her daughter Megan.

Club Standards

With so many races going on and the hard work put in by the ladies I hope you are checking the standards and letting Pauline know when you’ve achieved them.  It’s a great honour and a fab way of recognising your achievements…!

Julie Cruse has claimed her Gold Standard – well done Julie!

The times and age categories are listed on the website, www.weshamroadrunners.com/ClubStandards and are well worth checking out – you may be surprised to know that you may have already achieved the times necessary – and if you have, you merely have to let Pauline Weller or Captain Julie know, and the big award is yours!!

Personal Bests

There have been so many great achievements from everyone over the last few months. Everyone has been so busy and working so hard it’s great to see!  Below are a couple of times that deserve a special mention……

  • The Brathay Winderemere Marathon was completed by Michaela Dempsey (3:38:02), Julie Cruse (3:35:45), and Sarah Sharratt (3:43:37). They all did excellently.  Sarah got herself a PB and the time for the London entry.  Well done on a tough marathon.
  • London Marathon recognition needs to go to Carmel who worked hard training for London and deserved every success and she got it…. And made it look easy!!  Also Helen Briggs, who completed London in memory of her partner Charles’s dad. Not to forget Andrea Raynor who completed London for a second time – Congratulations to all these.
  • Another unique PB, which can’t really go unmentioned, was earned at the Coniston 14 by Jenny Salt.  Never having done the run before, Jenny excelled with a recorded time of sub 2.5 hours. BUT, if you subtract the 24 minutes late start and the 30 miles extra journey to get there, I reckon you would get nearer to her true running time.  I am sure Jenny loved every minute of the journey on the M6 to Coniston from Freckleton, via Penrith, as much as she loved the Coniston course!
  • Jenny Thompson (2:06:58), and Tracy Hulme, (2:16:15), both did excellent times at Coniston.  It was Tracey’s first time at this distance and she looked to enjoy every minute of the course.
  • It’s not just marathon/long distance runners that have been charting ever improving times….we have Beth De Nobrega who got 54:30 at the Blackpool 10K…..a great improvement for her and well earned!   Also congratulations to Diane Gallagher and Bernie Ashworth for completing the Blackpool 10k.
  • Someone who is improving in all areas, her times and her distances, is Tracey Hulme, who is going from strength to strength.
  • Showing that WRR Ladies will run all distances, Pauline Weller did exceptionally well at the Rosemere 5k recording a great time and first WRR lady home.  Well done.

Summer Handicap

Another well attended event – more enjoyable than the Winter Handicap mainly because of the change in the weather and the route.  Keith & Marion are always there on the finish line, congratulating you in….and coming up Carr Lane is a welcome sight!  Some good times have been produced already and I know the best is yet to come!

Relays

The Ladies Team of Julie Cruse, Carmel Sullivan, Michaela Dempsey and Sarah Sherratt ran an excellent relay at Birmingham and got a well deserved 5th Ladies Team.

Inter Club

Well, already two Inter Club races have been and gone and it’s great to see we have had a good turn out of ladies!  The Inter Clubs are a great way to see other local runners and to look out for runners of a similar standard and time to you.  Yes, there are the fast and fab runners at the front and team counters, but each of us counts.  The more that turn out contributes to the points that each club earns, so you really are wearing your WRR vest with pride.  There are some very strong runners out there from other clubs, particularly BW&F and Preston….but we all really do count and it is a nice mid week run which gives you the chance to run round safely and with your club members.  If you have never been, at least try it once…….it’s a great atmosphere and all of the WRR members, as well as other clubs, do cheer you on. It’s worth a go………!!? Dates, times and places can be found on the website, in this magazine’s Forthcoming Events section or ask either of us captains.

Fell Championships

Only a few ladies have had a go at the Fell Races but come on girls, give it a try. It might be your forte.

Supporters

I think a special mention in this article should go to Kirsty Waywell and Sue Eaton, (and their respective children, Megan and Emily May), who not only continue to support but have stood out in their lovely yellow shirts/jumpers promoting, not just WRR, but Simon’s efforts in running both London and Windermere Marathons!  Sun, rain and wind, the ladies have been there cheering us all on, amongst lots of others too, but promoting their fundraising awareness as well.  Thank you Kirsty for all the great photos of our endeavours. I think a special mention should go to them…..!  Thanks Ladies you really are a great help to us runners…….and it’s always appreciated….even if we don’t say it as we “sprint/run/jog/walk” past you!!?!

Coming Up

  • Freck Half is looming (Sunday, 17th June)……….a fantastic local course.  This is one race where if you haven’t entered you really have to go along and support.  The route is well known to most of us. It’s normally a hot afternoon race and the atmosphere is wonderful!  Good luck to all those running it…and, if your not cheering loudly, even better cheer loudly whilst marshalling if you can…..!!
  • For those that have booked there will no doubt be lots of fun, frivolity and running in the Isle of Man in August.

Nights Out

These have been a bit sparse these last few months so ladies, let us have some suggestions and we will try and arrange another Girly Nite out!!!
