Ladies Round Up – Sept 07

What a busy few months it’s been…..it would seem lots of the ladies are solar powered cause there has been no stopping them over the last few months!

New Members

Alex Wood has joined us and looks set to achieve great things! Although not a new member by any stretch of the imagination, Dette Dickinson gets a mention here cause as she has been on her student, summer holidays.  It’s been nice to see her able to make it down to the club more often!

A rather special welcome to our youngest lady member…..Emma Davies.  Emma has recently been recruited by her dad, Richard, and although she has a genetic advantage, Emma is far prettier than her dad and has already shown excellent skill doing some fell running.  Showing she’s multi talented already at the tender age of 13, she has had high rankings in a couple of local triathlons as well.  She is now the proud owner of her own WRR vest, so welcome on board Emma.

Star Runner

Joanna Goorney deserves a section all to herself here – as she remains a Wesham number one!  Not content with constant improvement at an elite level in road races, she has also made a debut on the track and continues her prize winning status and collected a couple of medals.  Joanna works hard at her running and deserves every success, well done!

Injuries

We have missed Beth the last few months who has been out due to injury, although she continues to support us girls even when not here.  There’s a rumour she may make a comeback in time for the cross country season!  We have seen the fantastic return of the clubs favourite member Marie Wyld, good to see you back doing a bit of running Marie!

Fell Championship

A few hardened runners have given this new challenge a good go!    A rather credible mention should go to Sarah S. who has done fantastically well!  She has been prepared to go and give it a go and done exceptionally well!  Rumour has it that she has taken a wrong turn or two en route – but even that doesn’t disgrace her, as her times have been fantastic!  Also, participating in a bit of off road action is Kath Hoyer, she has worked hard and had some good times and results with off road half marathons and fell runs…she makes it look like a walk in the park!  Well done ladies!

Personal Bests

I think one of our top runners at  the moment has to be Sue FearonSue is winning all round at the moment for PB’s and one of the best ‘give it a go’ attitude that makes the Wesham ladies a fun club to be in!  Chernobyl 10K was an outstanding run for Sue and was a PB justly deserved.  Sue is enthusiastic and so keen she deserves every success!

Pauline Weller is another that has gone from strength to strength especially in off road events.  For those that heard Pauline viciously declare last year after her Horrock Hill debut in 2006 that she would never do anything off road again would find it hard to believe this is the same athlete!

Annie D. had a fine run in the Lancaster Half Marathon – first vet 50 – not bad for a lady who’s struggled with injury!  She just went out and did it – didn’t she do well?

When you think of personal progress and improvements on times and performance you need look no further than Carmel.  Carmel makes running look easy, stylish and fun, yet constantly seems to be at the top of her field!    That said, if you had to listen to Mick’s jokes everyday, you too might learn to run faster!  (Only kidding Mick, I know your jokes are funny!)

Inter Club

I for one have to plead guilty to having made any of the club nights due to work commitments.  However, the ladies certainly did their best and didn’t let us down!  The good thing is everyone counts in the Inter Club, so for those that made the top five well done and for those that turned up on school night and ran, thank you!  It’s really appreciated, and without everyone turning out and running the points may not have added up to make us 3rd team!!

Summer Handicap

Well sadly we shall be leaving the course route behind for a few months due to the impending dark winter nights!  Massive congratulations though to a much deserved winner, that being Helen Jolly!  Helen has struggled to come back from injury and it’s great to see her take some credit for her fine running!  Well done Helen!

It goes without saying, a big thank you to Marion, (and Keith), for sorting us all with start times, results, the marshals and the whole summer handicap set up!  Thanks Marion, much appreciated!

International Athletes

We’ve had our Captain Murphy make her international debut in the Isle of Man Half Marathon….she was a star ambassador for her club, with a suitcase full of clothes for all weathers, she looked stylish, showed her ability to drink sufficient alcohol to see her into the wee small hours and was able to gamble in the casino as well as having a great run!  Well done Julie that was a fine, first international break….!

There’s rumour that our Julie C. is off to European shores to do a Marathon, (there is just no stopping that lady!).  Our one and only Michaela D. is also rumoured to be venturing over to Amsterdam to do a spot of running too – we’ll watch this space to see how they get on – no doubt fantastically well!

Nights Out

We’ve even managed to squeeze in a night out…..drinking and dancing in Poulton – once again thanks to Julie for sorting that one!  There was a good turnout of hardened drinkers, I mean athletes….which was made all the nicer as some of the B, W&F runners were out too!  The night was gate crashed by some of the boys but this did not limit the ladies’ drinking capabilities!  It’s hard arranging a night out round such a full running diary – and it is likely that the next night for your diary is the WRR Dinner Dance on 24th November 07 – which is always a fab night!

Going Forward

We do of course have the beloved Cross Country coming up – and we know how much fun that is….!?!  A day out in the fresh air on a Saturday afternoon, changing in the freezing cold tent, coming home with muddy spikes to clean – ooooooh I can’t wait!!  To whet our appetites there are some cross country relays in Manchester on the 6th October and, in true WRR style, it has been suggested we use that as a practice run and then congregate afterwards at a suitable establishment for a little something to eat and drink!   No expectations just a great chance to meet up, have a bit of run and have fun.  (More details to follow/announce at the club).

There is of the course the Wesham 10K, our own club race to take part in!  Whether it’s helping organise it, running it or marshalling it – it’s a must!

We’ve also got the monthly Winter Handicap runs to look forward to – I have to mention that cause the thought of two laps of Dowbridge….is just well…….sooooo exciting….!!!?    We know we need to do it; it’s a good way to chart our improvement/decline (!) and it’s well worth it for that cup of tea and biscuit afterwards!

Special Mention

We can not of course forget our lady photographer….without her we wouldn’t be as photogenic (!?) or as famous as we are…!!!  Massive congratulations, Kirsty, on your new baby son….I know Peter will want to take some credit here……but we look forward to seeing not just you and Megan back out again, but baby Thomas too!!!  We’re all delighted for you and the family!

Once again ladies if I have missed anyone out – I’m sorry you’re not seeing your name in print…..but you have to remember I’m the one that knows nothing…..about anything…..!!!??  Did anyone else know that the WRR go for a beer after the club on a Monday night…….ah well, if you didn’t know that makes me feel better!

PS  For those that would like to…..there’s a very lovely bunch of WRR members found in The Blue Anchor on a Monday night after leaving Carr Hill for a little drink or two!   Be there or be square…..!!
