WRR FELL RACE CHAMPIONSHIP 2007 |
|
Something new for 2007
will be the club’s Fell Running
Championship. It was decided that we
would introduce it due to members showing a keen interest. For the first year we will keep the rules simple
and review them for the following year, if successful:
·
I have
chosen seven races throughout the year with requiring you to complete four
races to qualify for the Championship.
·
One
point for the winner and then so on.
·
The person
with the least points, who qualifies by completing the correct amount of races,
wins.
·
For
the first year we will have an overall Men’s
Champion plus runner-up.
·
We
will also have an overall Women’s
Champion plus runner-up, with no age categories for either.
I will give you the races and dates later which may be subject to
change so they don’t clash with any key road/cross country races.
With the boring bit out of the way, why should you do fell
running? Just ask Richard Davies, Derek Buckley, Doug Brown, Helen Jolly, John Keohane,
Keith Gresty or anyone else who has done one.
Most of the fell races are part of a
village fete and start mid-afternoon from the village green, where usually
there are different activities going on – bouncy castle, fairground rides, best
looking vegetables and pony rides.

It is totally different to road running. The atmosphere is more relaxed with tales of
getting lost in the clouds or losing your way in the forest. It starts with a gentle climb up hill until
you reach the summit of the nearest mountain with breath taking views of the
valley below. Now this is where the real fun starts – the decent back
down. You are either like ‘Bambi’ tip toeing gently down, (count
me in this group), or you are like a mountain tiger, roaring down at a hundred
miles an hour like Peter Cruse or Richard Davies.
The key point is to enjoy it, hopefully not get lost along the way
and return in one piece. Usually the
course is marked with flags along the route with just one or two marshals
dotted here and there.
Well, that’s a quick introduction into Fell Running. You will learn
a lot more by competing in the Fell
Running Series. The benefits are
that you will find that your road running will improve and become easier.
Many thanks
Lee Barlow
