The group
have certainly handled large numbers well this term. The female section of
the group has improved enormously in this area. Without doubt this is a major
factor in their imminent promotion to a higher set. |

area of improvement. Porter Senior’s

Excellent. Continues to be the main strength of
this group. I understand some of the group are to carry on being active
during the summer recess. Wonderful dedication. |

CRAFT, DESIGN, TECHNOLOGY |
The group’s
ability at construction and demolition has been tested to the limit this
term. The introduction of new equipment has generally been successful. Efforts
have been well intentioned but recently challenged by inclement weather. |

PERSONAL & SOCIAL EDUCATION |
It is
gratifying to see that boys and girls can have good, healthy friendships without
any nasty bullying or back-biting. However, mention has been made concerning
the verbal treatment of young master Lee.
I personally believe he gives as good as he gets. |

ART/TEXTILES |
Much has
been made of Captain Barlow’s choice
of apparel. I see no problem here; at least he was wearing shorts! In fact,
whilst group members are becoming used to recognising the new accommodation, Vickers Senior’s leg wear often proves
to be an excellent point of contact on field trips. |

Please see
below for details of the group’s team and individual successes this term.
Before listing the club’s prize winners, it
is appropriate to thank and congratulate everyone who has taken part in cross-country
this season. Cross-country is
very much a team sport and everybody who takes part is a part of the club’s success.
What is very evident at all cross-country meetings is
the generosity of support and encouragement within the team. We all know from
personal experience the value of a few words of encouragement, particularly
when the going seems tough or that hill seems steeper than on the last lap. So,
whether or not your name appears on the list of prize winners below, ‘congratulations’,
give yourself a pat on the back. You deserve it!!
The captains would like to point out that, (disappointingly),
no cash has been offered for the honours mentioned below.
The first prizes of the season were won at

On her debut at cross-country, Carmel Sullivan took the bronze medal
in the FV40 category. Alex Rowe also took bronze in the MV45 category. Pride of place on the
day, however, must go to Barry Peatfield
and Dave Waywell, who both took
gold and therefore Lancashire
Championships at MV55 and MV60 respectively. Congratulations to you all.

In the Mid-Lancs
League, ‘four’ seemed to be our unlucky number as the men’s “A”, “B” and vet 40 teams, along with the ladies’
vet 35 team, all finished just outside the medals. However there were medal
winners and the most encouraging were the silver
medals won by the ladies. The turnout amongst the ladies this season has
been tremendous and has helped them gain promotion back to Division 2 at the first attempt. Well-done ladies. Another medal
winning team is the men’s vet 50 team
who took silver. Well-done to them.
On an individual level, congratulations go
to our evergreen chairman. Dave took
gold in the MV60 category. Let’s
hope that we have more success in turning out a team in this category next
season. I’m sure we could do well in it.
And so to the club’s own awards,

This is the

And
last but by no means least, the “Mud,
Sweat and Spikes Award”. It is always a difficult decision as to who
receives this award. It is awarded to the person we feel has contributed most to cross-country in terms of effort, enthusiasm and
commitment. There are always many to choose from. This year’s winner has shown
tremendous commitment and enthusiasm and her performances both at cross-country
and on the road have reflected this. She has gone from strength to strength,
her times have come down and she always seems to have a smile on her face,
whatever the conditions. The “Mud, Sweat
and Spikes Award” goes to Pauline
Weller. Congratulations to Pauline
and all the prize winners.
