Ladies Cross Country Report

When I was set up as Cross Country Captain, (sorry I mean nominated!) I had no idea what fun it would be?!!    This has been my first full season of cross country and my first season of not running cross country…!!!!  The bit that Captain Young failed to mention to me, when selling the role, was that lack of necessity to actually run in the cross country events!   Dave and I have both suffered some form of injury over this cross country season.  I have been slightly more fortunate though in the fact that I was able to run the very first meeting and the last one too – albeit badly!  Dave has not even had that pleasure but remains the most enthusiastic and upbeat Cross Country Captain I know – with unfailing optimism he is hopeful that he will be back for the next season and I know we all hope he is too!

So as a non-running Ladies Captain I had no more to do than recruit, turn up and then support – so, easy you may think – but, believe you me, it’s harder work than it looks!  I can’t claim to have worked hard though as I haven’t had the added responsibility of the bringing the tent, bringing the flasks of hot water, arranging coach travel, entering teams in Nationals and Northern’s, etc, etc – I can’t take credit from Captain Young – he works hard and cross country is his domain – I just hope that, when I grow up, I too will be as knowledgeable as him in such matters!!

Aside of Dave, my biggest thank you has to go to the Wesham ladies…cause, without such willing volunteers, being a Cross Country Captain would have been hard work!!  When I reflect back on last year, when I was introduced mid season to cross country, I remember how Wesham struggled to attract a ladies teams, relying on a few hard core members only.  We had one lady representative in London, on her own at the Nationals, (Julie Murphy!).  Well, what a different story this year – you have fielded a team at every cross country event from Mid Lancs, Northerns and Nationals – you really deserve to be very proud of yourselves.

I only have complete praise for how well the ladies have done this year.   Each event has seen a fabulous turnout –a full team, plus more, at all events, a range of runners month in month out, each one pushing themselves that bit further and harder each time.  Each member seems to have improved in either style, speed and/or ability.  Every runner at cross country has done fantastically well and here’s hoping that next season will see you all return as enthusiastic!

All the ladies, (and the gents!), have offered support for one another, laughed and at some moments thought, “What the heck am I doing here!!!”   However, aside of attendance, it would not be fair to end the season without mentioning the fact that ladies have definitely added a whole new dimension to the Wesham Cross Country Squad! To highlight a few examples of how the ladies have created a new image for Wesham are a few examples:

  • Wellies – need I say anymore…!?
  • Club toilet roll – yip a rather attractive pale blue colour to match the vests.
  • Tea, coffee, etc, etc.
  • More lady runners have equalled more lady supporters for the boys – and we know they love that really.
  • Club photographer, Kirsty Waywell – has also been present at a good few events this year – now there is a hard job!

I owe a huge thank you to the girls, as without so many willing athletes the season would not have been as much fun!  I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I have - a massive thank you!!

Get those spikes cleaned and carefully preserved for the 2007-08 season which begins in October 2007……ooooooh I can’t wait……??!!
