Mid-Lancs Cross-Country, Sefton Park,

or

Wesham’s Multi Event Day!

Saturday, 25th November 2006

On Saturday we again had the unfortunate clash of the Wesham 10k and a Mid-Lancs Cross-Country fixture incorporated into the UKA Challenge event, (and European Trials), in Liverpool.

Not much chance of a good turnout at cross-country as most of our members would probably, quite understandably, concentrate their efforts on the Wesham 10k in the morning and give the Sefton Park event a miss. What nonsense! That would reckon without the determination, dedication and commitment within the club.

Twelve men took to the Sefton Park mud, eight of them having already run in the Wesham 10k in the morning. This allowed the club to field two senior men’s teams, a Vet 40 team and a Vet 50 team. Five of the eight completed the “Wesham Triathlon” and danced the night away at the Dinner-Dance. Whilst Graham also turned out the following day for the David Staff Memorial Fell Race. You are allowed the odd half-day off Graham!

The “A” team finished 4th, the “B” team 3rd, Vet 40 team 5th and Vet 50 team 2nd each in their respective divisions. At individual level, Dave Waywell completed his second victory of the season in the Vet 60 category. Well-done to you all.

It has been a splendid start to the cross-country season with good turnouts at all the events. There are no fixtures in December so we look forward to seeing many of you at the County Championships at Witton Park, Blackburn on January 6th when the season resumes.

Due to the clash between the Wesham 10k and the Mid-Lancs fixture, there were no ladies at Sefton Park. This is because it was not possible for the ladies to get from Wesham to Liverpool in time for a 1.20pm start. Had it been so, I am sure they would have responded every bit as magnificently as the men. We sincerely hope that the clash between the two events does not occur again next year.

We do not know at this stage if the UKA Challenge will be on the final Saturday of November next year. We will, however, be approaching the Mid-Lancs League to find an alternative venue if necessary.

Finally, may we take this opportunity to wish everyone at Wesham Road Runners a very merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year. See you at Blackburn on the 6th.
