CROSS COUNTRY UPDATE

Dateline: - 14th February, 2009

Venue: - Wilson Playing Fields, Hyndburn

Event: - Mid Lancs cross country event.

After the recent cold snap warmer weather visited Hyndburn for the penultimate mid Lanc's Cross Country event in which three ladies and fifteen men took part for Red Star Wesham RR.

The ladies squad found themselves short on numbers due to holidays, injuries and prior commitments. So it was, with a tinge of relief, that the girls had three comradettes, led by the ever reliable and lady Capitano, Julie C.

The boys fielded fifteen comrades led by Charlie P. Have the "A” team done enough to stave off relegation? As they say in Moscow, "It's never over until the Fat Babushka sings", - only time will tell, but it would appear that consolidation was the name of the game. One last heave should see the squad over the Division A finish line safely.

What happened to the normally invincible Vet 50 men? 2nd!!! It doesn't affect the destination of the Vet 50 Mid Lanc's Shield but to go through the whole season undefeated would have been quite a coup.

In light of our continuing struggle to cling onto our Premiership status I would ask all Wesham’s comrades to turn out in force at Blackburn, March 14th 2009. May I also take this opportunity to remind you all of Cross Countries Season ending climax, the Mud Sweat and Spikes Presentation night, Monday 16th March, 19:45 hrs, I shall be down at the Club Monday night to take names.

WESHAM

RR

On a positively tropical day ‘six brave men and true’ flew the flag for Red Star Wesham RR at the 2009 English Cross Country Championships held on England's premier XC course, the ever testing Parliament Hill Fields.

Three comrades, plus one ever suffering wife, pre made their way to the "Smoke" to make a weekend of it to be joined, on the day, by their three remaining comrades, passports at the ready, who made the long, and perilous, journey south, fuelled by copious amounts of coffee, on the day.

The pre race warm up consisted of lugging the tent to the event, via the Underground, from Brent Cross to the venue. Once erected, the tent of course, it was a quick recce of the course before battle commenced lead from the front by Wesham’s hardy perennial, Alex R who, despite biting the dust, metaphorically speaking, still crossed the line, somewhat battered and bruised, as Wesham’s leading man, followed by the evergreen John C, your Dear Leader, Mark M, Trevor R (who’s he?) and the ever, ever, ever green Dave Y.

To summarize, "a good time was had by all", and, as always, everyone's efforts were much appreciated.
