introduction to Competitive Miles 2010/11
Hip Hip Hooray, Hip Hip Hooray. Yes, the Competitive Miles is back with myself as the new compiler of the spreadsheet. A big thank you must go to Alex for the work he has put in over the last few years, and of course to Richard Davies who got things started back in 2005.
This year we will revert back to publishing the spreadsheet on the website. I will also provide a summary at the end of each month. I liked it that way. It allows people to see what runs others are doing, which I always found interesting. It also gives yourselves the opportunity to keep the spreadsheet correct by looking at what I have recorded, and informing me of omissions and errors.
The procedure is the same as before.
The calculation of miles commences with the Liverpool XC on the afternoon following the 2010 Wesham 10K and continues up to and including the Wesham 10K in November 2011.
All races entered by Wesham Road Runner members will count towards the total, this will include: Road, Cross Country, Fell, Trail and Track, and Inter Club events, Club Handicaps and Relays. These will include local, national and international events. Handicaps organised by other clubs and speed interval training sessions will not be included. Open League meetings such as the Stretford Grand Prix will be included. Measured distances such as relay legs will be recorded as published; cross country and fell distances may be estimated. The distances for the men and women at cross country events will be recorded as run i.e. the women run a shorter course than the men.
A trophy will be awarded to the male and female athletes who have run the most competitive miles during the year.
I will gather as many results as I can from the various websites; there is no need for you to do anything unless you notice that I have missed any of the races that you have entered. If this is the case PLEASE HELP ME by letting me know at nigelshep@tiscali.co.uk or give me a ring on 01772 792196. Don’t bother with the mobile. It’s not usually switched on.
The list of members’ names on the spreadsheet is up to date as far as I am aware, if your name is missing PLEASE LET ME KNOW.
In case of any disagreement over the calculation of distance or total mileage the decision of the committee will be final
So get running.

Well, we’re just over a month into the new Competitive Miles year and its ‘Hats Off’ to top athlete Peter Waywell for topping the table at the end of December with 41 miles in 2 races; 18 miles ahead of the mileage of 2nd place. Peter’s first run was the 36 mile tour of Hellvelyn in what must have been arctic conditions; probably no big deal for Peter, but an impossibility to run such a distance for all but a few of our members. He then managed the Rudolph the next day. Well done to Peter.
Second place is the reigning Competitive Miles lady champion Kath. That’s champion from 2008/09 as there was no competition last year. Kath has started the year as she means to go on, with 23.1 miles spread over 4 races. Not a massive total for the month, but bearing in mind half of the races in December were cancelled, she has not done bad to find 4 races. Kath is closely followed by Chris, Michaela and Sarah, three more high mileage contenders.
And how about the men’s current champion? Well, that would be myself. Presently in joint 56th place. OK then equal last. My mitigating circumstance is a minor calf injury. But I’ll be back soon, so look on it as me giving you all a head start.
There’s a long way to go yet. So keep running.

WRR Competitive Miles 2010/11
Report at the end of February 2011
Who would believe it? It seems like we’ve just got going and we’re already a quarter way through the year. Top of the table at the end of February is Michaela, for the second month running, with 113.8 miles. Sarah is 10 miles behind in 2nd place, and Kath has moved up into 3rd. Mick Edge has dropped back from 3rd place into 4th, although I believe he may have tracked down a 10k over in Mexico, so that may have to be added in later.
Top runners for February were Kath, Michaela and Graham.
Most miles for the month was Kath with 39.2 miles.
Most races for the month were Michaela, Sarah and Kath, all with 5 races.
The longest race in Feb was the Seville Marathon run by Trevor Rayner.
The biggest turnout in Feb was the Blackpool XC with 16 Wesham runners.
As always, if I’ve missed any races or you’ve spotted any errors, please let me know.

The report in the Spring magazine covered up to end February, so we’ll pick up from there.
Report at the end of March 2011
Just to recap – at the end of Dec, Peter W was the leader. Michaela took over top position in Jan, following Peter’s injury, and at the end of Feb, Michaela retained 1st place for the second month running, with a 10 mile lead over Sarah, followed by Kath and Mick, who with Carmel were off to Mexico to find a run in the sunshine. Well they found two runs and returned with wads of prizes.
March was a better month for the men, with Graham, Lee, Troy and myself being the top 4 mileage runners for the month, but not good enough to knock the ladies off the top of the table. At the end of March the top athlete for the 3rd month running was Michaela with an increasing lead of 24 miles over Sarah, who was less than a mile in front of Kath. Mick and Graham were the highest placed men.
Top runners for March were Graham, Lee and Troy.
Most miles for the month was Graham with 63.1 miles.
Most races for the month were Graham, Lee, Nigel and Kath, all with 5 races.
The longest race in March was the 25 Mile Trollers Trot run by Graham.
The biggest turnout in March was the St Annes 10 with 35 Wesham runners – an excellent turnout.
So a big well done to top competitor Graham – but can he keep it up?

Report at the end of April 2011
The big achievement for the month has got to be April’s Marathon de Sables. 151 miles spread over a week running through the African desert. I would have expected April to go straight into 1st place but a serious lack of other races has kept her down in 7th place. Another run worth a mention is the 3 Peaks fell race run by Russ, Sarah, Gary and Graham. It’s a bit of a slog at the best of times but I’m told that this year was a bit on the windy side going up Whernside preventing top runner Graham from reaching the checkpoint in time. He’ll be back.
Look away now Sarah and Kath. This month saw disaster for our 2nd table topper Michaela, doomed for being in 1st place for 3 months. Michaela suffered a bad fall at my home village of Cartmel, and is out of action for a while. Hope to see you back running soon. That’s the first two table toppers out of action. My strategy here is to stay a bit lower in the table to escape the perils of being in top place, and then move up to an easy victory with some big runs in the last few weeks.
So we have the third new leader for this year, and it’s top athlete Sarah, who by the way is now talking to me again after taking a slightly dodgy photo. Kath is hot on her heels, followed by Graham and Mick.
Top runners for April were April, Sarah, Gary and Kath.
Most miles for the month was April with 151 miles.
Most races for the month was Kath with 8 races (the record for this year)
The longest race was of course April with the Marathon de Sables, and a new record for the longest race.
The biggest turnout in April was the Caldervale 10 with 30 Wesham runners (ignoring the Inter Club).

Report at the end of May 2011
Hold on a minute. This competition is for quantity not quality, and Champion Runner Steve has snook into 1st place for the most miles run during May, beating the regular high mileage runner Mick by less than a mile. Kath and Lee are 3rd and 4th for the month.
Most miles for the month was Steve with 56.7 miles.
Most races for the month was Lee, with a massive 10 races and breaking Kath’s record from last month. Sue Jones also needs a mention for achieving 9 races.
The longest races in May were the Shakespeare, Windermere and Edinburgh marathons run by George, Helen, Jenny, Mike, Brian, Dave and Nigel (not all run by all of the people just in case you were getting confused).
The biggest turnout in May was the Blackpool 10k Fun Run with 24 Wesham runners (ignoring the Inter Club and Handicap).
On the overall leader board at the end of May, Sarah is still going strong in 1st place for the second month running with 264 miles, with Kath only 12 miles behind. In 3rd place and 1st male athlete is Mick with 230 miles, followed by Graham and Lee.
