I am always amazed just how fast the year moves on when you
have to work to a deadline or is it just that being retired means that every
day is a deadline. I suppose it is really because my favourite saying is: “I’ll
do it tomorrow” but unfortunately that will not wash with Auntie Bren. So here goes with another
mind provoking diatribe of complete garbage which most probably will not be
read and the rest will forget what it was they had read anyway. Bless her, Kath reads every word and then tells me
where I have got wrong and, on the odd occasion, praises me for getting
something right. So this is my attempt at getting it all right, so now read
on…………
First of all, my congratulations
to the ladies who, as a team, came runners up to

While still looking back, it was sad to lose the “Hash race” but who could have
envisaged a day as bad as that and, as Alan
said, there would have been absolutely no enjoyment for anyone. Perhaps next
year we will have another go - if Alan
is still up for it?
Just to ensure that you are all aware that the year is
ending, I have to remind you that the other series has also finished. “Which
series?” I hear you ask? The Summer
Handicap of course and, to cap a wonderful series, although not always dry
/warm series due to the vagaries of this summers weather, we had a super,
final, trophy race and a really pleasing result with Helen Jolly in first and Dave
Young second, both being presented with there trophies at the school later.
So let’s move on and let you know what is going on in the
next few months as we fast approach Xmas.
The first thing to mention is of course the Wesham 10K on the 24th
November, when many of you will be donning your shorts and vest and joining
the many others from all over the country running round that scenic, flat and
fast course in the hope of achieving something special on the day. Fingers
crossed, many of you will. However, those who are not running for whatever
reason, there are many jobs to do on the day and, without your help, we just
cannot hold the event which, by the way, does keep the club financially sound.
That in itself makes it a good reason to help anyway. So, if you are available,
please contact me, Dave Waywell or Keith Rhead by phone, email or face to
face or let someone else know. Then they can pass the message on. It is
important that you help if at all possible.
The race is of course followed later that day by our very
own Dinner Dance and Presentation Evening and details of
that are to be found elsewhere in this magazine.
Two other races which the club is involved in during this
period are the ‘Veterans 10 miler’
sponsored by ‘ULTRAFIT MAGAZINE’ and
assisted by ‘SWEATSHOP’. It is held
on the St Annes 10 course but open
only to men and women aged 35 and over. This takes place on the 14th October and there is an
excellent prize table with awards going to the first two in every age category.
This race is followed on Saturday 22nd
of December by the ‘Rudolf Red Nose Race’
which proved so popular last year. It is again on same course, venue and times
together with the same goody bag as well .The sponsors are again ‘SWEATSHOP’ and the ‘GARDEN RESTAURANT’. Entries close the
week before for both these races and there are no entries on the day at either. Again, I can only ask that if you
are available to marshal at either or both of these races then please
contact Dave Waywell (01253 357637) or email me at DaveWaywell@lancsfirerescue.org.uk.
I leave the best till
last and that has to be the start of the X
Country season, the dates of which are again elsewhere in this magazine
and, not to be left out, are the Winter
Handicaps. Again the dates are to be found within these pages. Don’t forget
that both the ‘Age Related’ and ‘Road Race Championships’ also
conclude shortly and the 2007/08
lists of selected events are hopefully available also in this copy. The
inaugural Fell Championship has
proved popular and this also concludes shortly with the winners getting their
just deserts at the club’s Presentation
Evening. Congratulations to Lee Barlow on his first foray into event
organisation. I am sure he will have learnt a lot and I can’t wait to see next
year’s programme. That is about all I can think of as far as the calendar is
concerned but you have to admit there is plenty to get your teeth into so
please don’t just read and forget. Either participate or volunteer to help but do get involved. We love to see you even if it is only to tell
us what we are doing right or wrong.
I am sure you will all have been relieved to hear that the
club is not once again being made homeless as our contract with the school has
been renewed. However, the costs have
increased quite a bit, but we did expect it and we think it is probably good
value for money even yet.
There are some presentations by professional people and
firms being lined up for Monday
evenings and I hope you can find the time to support them as they are usually
short and sweet and take place after your training run. The only date known at
present is 24th Sept. and
that is about the treatment of foot injuries. New dates will be put on the
website as soon as they are known.
So how do I finish off this time? Well I suppose I could
mention that one of our members Kirsty
Waywell who is probably better known as our club photographer has just given birth to a boy, and whose husband,
Peter, looks forward to training
with him but, for the time being, it will be confined to nappy training. So on behalf of you all I am sure we would
like to wish them all the best and “yes” that does mean I am a Grandad yet again - (a proud one though).
At this time I am not aware of anyone with any really long
term injuries but, just in case, let’s all wish them well and hope they recover
quickly and get back running as soon as possible as we always miss them and
look forward to seeing them again. That’s about it for now, so do enjoy what
you are doing and hopefully I will see all of you between now and Xmas at least once if not more often.
