Osteopathy and Sport

When most people think about osteopathy, they think about it being
a treatment for bad backs, and, whilst this is partly correct, osteopaths
actually treat the whole musculoskeletal system, i.e. any joint, ligament, or
muscle. Whether you have problems with
your back, knee or shoulder, or you are suffering with a trapped nerve or
sciatica, or you are generally stiff and achy, osteopathy can help.
It is a therapy that involves the diagnosis and treatment of a wide
range of medical conditions, and is based on the principle that the well-being
of an individual depends on how well the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and
connective tissues of the body are functioning.
Osteopaths use a holistic approach which means they
consider the body as a unit and not just a collection of individual parts;
treatment aims to restore balance to the body as a whole. They will treat the cause of your symptoms
and not just the symptomatic area alone.
For example, someone may be suffering with lower back pain which may
actually be due to poor foot mechanics – the poor foot mechanics transfer
forces inappropriately along the leg and pelvis – resulting in pain in the
back. The Osteopath would treat all of the areas affected and not just the
back.

Treatment techniques used include palpation, massage and stretching
of the soft tissues; and manipulation to improve the mobility of joints, reduce
muscle tension, and to ensure a good blood and nerve supply to the
tissues. Simple exercises may be
prescribed along with advice about posture and diet.
Because a thorough case history is taken at the first appointment,
the osteopath gains a clear understanding of all the stresses and strains that
have in the past, or are currently affecting your body.
Osteopaths are well placed to treat sports people –
they can treat existing conditions or help to improve performance. By
using their knowledge of diagnosis and their highly
developed palpatory skills an osteopath will work to restore structural
balance, improve joint mobility and reduce soft tissue restrictions so that
ease of movement is restored and performance enhanced.
As well as treating sporting injuries,
osteopaths commonly treat back and neck pain, shoulder and arm problems,
pelvis, hip and leg problems, and aches and pains associated with structural
changes during pregnancy.
To qualify, an osteopath must study for four to five years for an
undergraduate degree. This is similar to a medical degree, but there is more
emphasis on anatomy and musculoskeletal medicine and includes more than 1,000
hours of training in osteopathic techniques. By law, osteopaths must register
with the General Osteopathic Council. The British
Medical Association’s guidance for general practitioners states that
doctors can safely refer patients to osteopaths.
This article was written by Samantha Ploutarchou. Samantha
is a Registered Osteopath who has
her clinic in Great Eccleston. Sam
enjoys sport having completed several half marathons and many 10K runs. She is well placed to understand the problems
that can arise due to running.
