COMMITTEE REPORTS

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

2010 was a year of many ups and downs for the club. The membership was pretty stable with new members arriving consistently but not always filling in that form and, of course, there was the inevitable resignation of several members. The thing is, there is no entry fee for joining so often some old members do come back, sometimes after a long protracted injury or illness. Sometimes because they realise we are the best club in the area.

I must thank all the Committee for their hard work and diligence over the past 12 months. It often goes unnoticed by many but I assure you all the elected members take their role seriously and for the perks of a free brew and chocolate biscuit on meeting nights they do put in the work. Sadly one of them has chosen to resign this year so I would like to thank Alan Glasgow for his heroic efforts as men’s XC captain and hope that the experience has been an enjoyable one.

I have resigned as race director due to the amount of time I am having to commit to the 10k and the inter club, and in the hope that someone will come along and add something that will revitalise areas of the race which may not be as good as they could be.

Special mention again goes to our non runners Marian and Keith Rhead, Ian Evans, Derek Emmens and Brenda Earnshaw who commit so much to the smooth running of the club. There are many others, some who have nothing to do with the club, who still volunteer to come down and help at the races and social events. My thanks, and those of all the members, go to you and hopefully we will see you all again in the coming year.

Again this year there is a proposed change to the clubs constitution driven by myself which I hope you can support but only of course if you agree with it and it is what I promised you in my report last year.

Finally, I have finished off most of my previous reports with some sad news, and this year is no exception I’m afraid. Just this last week we have laid to rest one of those people who don’t run anymore but  give to the club so much of there life and Gordon Durber, was one of those who was always ready to help when needed. His last endeavour was as a marshal on the Wesham 10k, which he as been for many years.   This year, even though quite poorly he was there once more and then later on at the dinner dance, which he bravely stayed at, even though the strains of the day were etched into his face. A true gentleman who many of us will remember especially when the Ricky Shultz trophy is presented, as this was Gordon’s son in law, and it was he who presented it to us. It will now leave us with a lasting memorial of him.

I cannot finish without mentioning Reg Chapman, who, over the past year, as had a pretty horrendous time. However his courage and determination, as well as his desire and willpower to keep running, will once more be needed to fight the battle all over again following the devastating news that the cancer as spread and he is likely to have a further operation next week. I have no doubt whatsoever that he will, with his sheer determination and the love of his family and many friends make a speedy and full recovery. I am sure that all of you who know him will think of him over the next few weeks and we will all look forward to the next time we see him on the start line.

Dave Waywell

Chairman

THE VIEW THROUGH MY OLD EYES

First of all, as this will be the first magazine of 2011, may I belatedly wish you all a Happy, Healthy New Year. The first thing I will talk about was my premature decision to resign as Chairman at the AGM. It was instigated by the fairly obvious fact that, as time has gone by, I have been taking on more and more things which had been noticed by the committee following this years Wesham 10k when, and I do admit, I looked pretty shattered when Kath and myself arrived at the Presentation Evening at the Euston hotel.

Concern was expressed by the Committee at the next meeting, (and I do again admit that the opportunity to transfer some of my commitments to others was very tempting). However, as the offer came a little out of the blue, I felt I should respond, and as I hold two Committee posts my first, not instant response, was to relinquish the Chairman’s position. After discussing this decision and looking at the alternative, the Race Directors post, I felt that if I was going to benefit in any way then this other post should be the chosen one to relinquish. This was accepted by the Committee and is the end of the story as far as I am concerned. As a volunteer has come forward to take over this role I feel that I will be able to serve you better now as Chairman, but of course that depends on whether or not I am re-elected at this years AGM.

Just prior to the AGM we were hit by a double whammy: First of all, our rent for using the school classroom and changing rooms/ showers has been doubled to £60 per week and back dated to September. The second thing is that the school is considering changing times of school availability for outside bodies to 5pm to 7.30pm. To cut a long story short, the Committee has instigated an investigation into alternatives available to us and these will be discussed with members prior to any decision being made but there will have to be some changes based on much better information than is available as I write this article, so watch this space.

So what is in store over the next few weeks? Hopefully you will read the article on the Central Lancashire Grand Prix elsewhere in this magazine. The first race will have been run by now and, with luck, we will have started with at least ten club members so as to at least have a points total, not swelled by some maximum points gained by any shortfall in entries on the day. It would be an achievement if we could challenge for more of the trophies, team or individual, than we managed last year. All I will say is that there is no selection; you are in it by just entering and finishing the race.

Next in line is the St Anne’s 10 on the 20th March which we co host with Lancs. Fire AC. It is a Wesham RR Club Championship qualifier as well as the Lancashire AA 10 Mile Championship, but you must tick the box to make sure you are in this one and yes, it is free to participate in both of these championships.

I would again ask you to assist if possible with the race management as in the past and, by doing so, not only do you get a goody bag but the club also receives a donation between £500 and a £1000. If you are available to help on the day please contact either me Dave Waywell (01253 357637).

Whilst on the subject of marshalling can I remind you that the club has once again offered our assistance with the organisation of the three Cuerden Valley 10k trail races on the 2nd and 30th of June along with the 4th August. Graham Vickers and I, assisted by Kath Hoyer, (if she can get off work), set the course up in the afternoon. All we ask is for some of you to commit to registering, marshalling, timekeeping, or recording on the night. We realise it is a big ‘ask’ but the reward is a fat cheque coming to Wesham RR, which again helps the club to pay its way without the members having to pay a large subscription fee to enter or stay in the club. All we are asking is for your help on one, two or all three of these races, so if you do have the time would you please ring me, Dave Waywell (01253 357637) or Graham Vickers (07533 316774) and tell us which race(s) you can help us with. Please look in your diary at these three dates bearing in mind that the races start at 7.30 pm. If you are available and willing to help then pick up the phone and ring us just as soon as you can.

Whilst on this subject, we are looking for a fourth person to join the team in marking out the course on the above three dates. The reason we are asking is to try and ensure that we can cover any periods of time when someone cannot make it on the day due to reasons beyond their control and making, as sure as we can, that there will always be at the very least two people in attendance. The times of commitment are 3.30pm to 6.30pm and obviously, if at all possible, till the end of the race but of course this last bit is not imperative. If you think you may be able to do this please give Graham or me a ring to discuss.

It may seem early telling you this, but put in your diary now, under 18th July, the words Wesham Interclub and then make sure you can come along to either run or marshal. Interclub races are still the best series of races in which we participate as a club. Free to enter, challenging, competitive and yet with a friendly aura around them. Of course all participating clubs like to think, their race is the best in all aspects, and of course we are no different. So, as I said, early warning – let’s make sure we are again the very best, by ensuring you are there on the day/night helping, supporting or running.

The last two club events and dates, which are at present only proposals, are the Birthday run and meal on 20th June and the Predictor race on the 15th August.

So what about the unfortunate ones who have been laid low for some time due to injury or illness. In the last newsletter I told you about Yvonne Russell, Pauline Weller, and John Keohane and perhaps an update is my best bet. Well Yvonne has carried on her recovery and, although to my knowledge, she as not been running with the club, she as been getting her fitness back and she as also been a regular volunteer at all the clubs organised events. Pauline is making progress and, as far as I am aware, the prognosis is still good but she as decided not to rejoin the club this year. I am sure you will all join me in wishing her a speedy recovery and maybe she will be back with us in the future. John is coming on in leaps and bounds, well not literally, but, to put it in perspective, he is progressing towards what he was able to do before being struck down over a year ago and I am sure we will see more of him this year.

Someone I have not mentioned for a while is Derek Buckley and I suppose the good news is that I have heard that he is back on the bike and just an outside chance that he may be back running in the near future.

One person I have to mention is Reg Chapman whose life as been disrupted over the last 18 months. He has, nevertheless, maintained his desire to overcome all the adversities and carry on his running career regardless of having an operation to remove a toe which had become cancerous. He then discovered the cancer had spread into lymph nodes which had to be removed. During this time he had got back running and also racing with his times slowly improving. His willpower and bravery shining through the pain - he suffered in silence. Sadly he as had to stop running again as there is now a possible cancer on his lung. An operation again is imminent but he has told us that, although this may have interrupted his latest comeback, he thinks he should be able to put the shoes on again in the summer and I for one believe him and look forward to writing about his progress in the next magazine.

Another absentee due to a recurring injury is Peter Waywell who is awaiting a scan to find out what damage as been done and hopefully it is not too bad and we see him back on the ultra runs once again.

Anyone I may have missed I apologise, but do wish all those mentioned, and any I haven’t, the speediest recovery and we all look forward to you joining us on the starting line once again.

Lastly we lost a founder member of the club in mid February. Gordon Durbar was a prolific runner and walker doing many marathons all over the world as well as at home. He was still out there in 2010 at the ripe old age of 82 still enjoying his walking and was planning another marathon, we believe, in 2011 his 83rd year. Although looking frail and tired he still insisted on coming to marshal the 2010 Wesham 10k - a thing he had done for many of the past few years.  Then, brushing aside all the tiredness brought on by his efforts that day, he was there at the dinner dance that evening as chipper and cheeky as ever. A gentleman, a traveller, and a proud Wesham Road Runner to the end.

The Secretary’s Summary of the past Committee Meetings

Including the Annual General Meeting

November Committee Meeting

  • Chairman David made the observation that the rules on how the points are awarded for Club events, particularly Cross Country and Fell, need clarification, and presented in written form, thus avoiding problems arising.

December Committee Meeting

  • Ribby Hall has confirmed the booking for the Club’s 2011 Presentation Dinner Dance.
  • The Committee had some discussion about the amount of work, on behalf of the Club, that Chairman David undertakes and it felt that it was too much. David agreed to relinquish some of the work he presently does and would delegate more.

January Committee Meeting

  • Carr Hill was requested to give us more advanced notice when the facilities used by us would not be available.
  • Alan Taylor agreed to work more closely with the Committee regarding the races he organises.
  • The minutes of Committee Meetings would no longer be distributed to members, as it was felt unnecessary. Any member wanting sight of these minutes should contact the Secretary.

2011 Annual General Meeting

The minutes of this meeting have been circulated to all members.

The main items were:

  • The committee elected was as last club year with the exception of John Bertenshaw replacing the resigning Alan Glasgow, and Graham Vickers would be the Race Organiser.
  • The only Constitution change related to Second Claim members who now will not be able to win or affect the results of any club championship races.
  • The Committee’s proposal to raise the membership fees for 2012 by £2 was carried unanimously.

LADIES CAPTAIN’S REPORT

It’s magazine time again and I thought I would do my report early seeing as will be away on  cruise for the first two weeks of February and as usual miss the AGM,  (Brenda can you add a crying smiley here please), but I will be thinking of you..............I think not.

The ladies have been having some really good times since the last magazine with our new runners really performing. Emma has finally accepted that she is a runner and started racing and getting brilliant results - Joanna watch out!!!!! Helen just seems to turn out PB after PB. I don’t know where these ladies get the energy or find the time to put the training in to get such good results but whatever you are doing girls please keep it up as we are now giving some of the other clubs a run their money especially in the team events as you are providing super back up to the likes of Joanna and Carmel who are coming back from injury, Sarah, Michaela, Kath, Tracey and Angela.

We had a great time off road a few weeks ago which saw many of the girls running and swimming for some for the first time off road which reiterated the type of club we are ‘friendly’ and Lee certainly played the gentleman standing in three foot deep water to help the ladies cross, as the stream was some what deeper and wider that its normal 6”. We must do more of those through the winter and the summer nights..............what do you say?

As it is the Cross Country season I am going to sign off and leave the rest to Tracey so until the next magazine.

Bye for now

Kerry

MENS CAPTAIN’S REPORT

I am pleased to inform everyone that I am once again the Men’s Captain and will take up office for 2011 season.  It was also nice to hear that fellow captain Charlie Adam will also be continuing as captain of Blackpool FC for at least the first part of 2011.  Charlie and I both eat at Ego restaurant, Lytham and if you win the “Runner of the Day” award when representing the club in the relays, you will receive an Ego voucher and an opportunity where you might meet Charlie. I was voted in with absolutely no opposition or competition - quite like one of the many Arab states where people are too scared to oppose the government.  I will bear in mind the troubles in the East and be wary that an uprising could occur quickly if I do not perform to the expectations of the members.  So without further ado I will publicise the first event of the season, the Northern Men’s 12 Stage Relay to be held on Sunday 20 March 2011 at Catterick Garrison.   If you are male and can run, please put yourself forward for this event.  You do not have to be any good at all. We have had some right donkeys run last year particularly me and Peter Cooke, who are both awful and well past our best, so get in there!

The winter months is a time-off for relay competition, however I have kept my eye on individual results and the new crop of talent coming down Wesham on a Monday night.  There are many good new runners who have been running in the orange Sotos T-shirts during these harsh nights and I call on you now to put yourselves forward and become stars.  Three years ago the British public was not aware of Jessica Ennis, and then suddenly she is the champion of the world and the golden girl of British athletics.  Follow in the footsteps of Jessica and become a star, but in male athletics!

The 2010 relay season was a success as a Wesham men’s team competed in all the relay events, but this year, I want more. I want glory, medals, respect, and recognition from other clubs.  If you are not doing a marathon this year, how about a change, and focus on running fast four milers?  If this is appealing to you, then the relays are for you!  I will be sending emails around the club, and putting messages on the Message Board to recruit what, I hope, is a nimble and powerful squad to shake up the local athletics world!

From a personal point of view I am still struggling with the battle against German beers, assorted cheeses, crisps and a wide array of chocolates which is hampering my progress at the moment.  I hope to one day win the battle, but it is becoming increasingly hard being near to temptation – I live within one mile of both Aldi and Lidl which makes my life very tough!  Despite these problems I still managed to run four marathons in 2010, which again confirmed me as Wesham’s Top International Marathon Runner.

I look forward to another wonderful athletics year in the build up to the Olympics.

TREASURERS REPORT

2010 ACCOUNTS AND BUDGET 2011

For the members who did not receive my e-mail or attend the AGM here is a synopsis of the 2010 accounts and 2011 budget.

2010 accounts

Surplus

A surplus of £436.84 was made, which would have been more if Carr Hill not seen fit to increase our weekly rent to £59.63 per week from £30 per week. Their explanation was that we had not been charged for the showers previously, even though they knew that we used them and it was part of our initial application.

There were a few reasons why there was a surplus of £436 in 2010 against a deficit of £869 in 2009.

1.     Profit on clothing £738 – this includes closing stock, which will only be seen to be correct if all the items are sold.

2.     £1,500 more donations – due mainly to the Cuerden Valley races, which hopefully will continue to donate this year. Donation is for marshalling duties (same applies to Ron McAndrew races) and, therefore, if not running please offer to marshal and the club may get some money.

3.     No computer repairs this year (£288 in 2009)

Against those there were some extra payments in 2010.

4.     Welsh Castles and other race fees and transport costs increase of £777 – however, this has been addressed and there will be, at least, a reduction of £700 in 2011.

5.     The afore-mentioned rent increase – Not a major effect in 2010 (£224) as only related to last quarter, but will have an effect next year. That is of course if we stay at Carr Hill, which is unlikely.

I also did not know at the time of preparing the accounts and budget that Carr Hill were not charging us for the summer term. This meant that the accrual (expected costs on top of what is paid) is £240 too much. This will affect 2011 accounts as it will reduce that year’s rent – any accrual is credited in the next year’s accounts – by £240.

6.     For other marshalling duties free birthday meals were offered totaling £201.

Budget 2011

Obviously this is only guess work at this time, based on 2010 figures and what is known already for 2011.

It showed a deficit of £283.35, but that included a full year’s rent at £59.63 a week (we do not pay every week as Carr Hill is closed on bank holiday’s), totaling £2,600 (an increase of £800 on the 2010 accounts figure.  This may or may not be incorrect, dependent on whether we stop at Carr Hill.

MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY’S REPORT

We started 2010 with 154 members and finished the year with 160 which includes all the various categories from First Claim to Honorary Members. This is a slight increase on 2009 when those who have left us are taken into consideration. We had 27 new members join us, all of which are runners which is one more than in 2009.

For those of you who read and remember my report in the last magazine regarding England Athletics going from a paper based/ letter system to an electronic one regarding the Competition Licence Card, I am pleased to report that this has now been put on hold and the old system of you receiving your information through the post will continue.

Could I remind members that, to receive full membership privileges, members are requested to complete a Renewal Form and pay as soon as possible but before the end of April 2010 if you are to receive full club privileges.
