TRULY AMAZING – NEAR AND FAR

What a proud time it is to be associated with Wesham Road Runners.  We are like Star Trek – boldly going into the unknown, searching for the ultimate running experience on all frontiers.  These last few weeks we have raced in several great events, each time doing the club proud in that we are ‘The Friendly Club’, who excel in making each event more memorable.

We can go back to March to the Coniston 14 where we took the honours once again in both the men’s and women’s teams, the support on route by the Wrinklys, the staying over in Ambleside where, as a group, we all went out together.  This is the togetherness which is Wesham.

The London Marathon once again saw Steve at his best being the first local, Alex being the third Vet and Steve Myerscough running his first sub three hours – the list goes on and on.

Having never experienced the Welsh Castles before I was not quite sure what I was letting myself in for - spending the weekend in a mini bus with several members which I had not really spent much time with or knew!  I need not have worried.  At first, when Jo Goorney turned up, I though I had made a mistake as I was led to believe we were staying in a fantastic B&B, when, out of her car came ruck sack after ruck sack, sleeping bags, cuddly toy, food and drinks.  Obviously, like all women, she always travels light and prepares for any eventuality.  However, I must give her a big ‘thanks’.  If I ever got lost, she would be the first person on my list to call.  Sitting in the navigation seat for the first time and only time, I sent us six miles the wrong way.  When time was running out to make it back for something to eat at the hotel, Jo raised her head from feeling unwell, looked at the map for one second and put us back on the right road. My Hero!   I needed food and a beer and we got there in time due to her skills.  For me the best weekend going and if you have not done it before put it on your list. The spirit is second to none. On each leg the support is great and everyone puts in their best effort in heat which is way to ‘hot run in’. Long may it continue. I will be there next year.

At the Freckleton Half it was great to see Richard Davies counting for the Wesham team and picking up a prize in his local race, beating some of the top guns in the club. When he looked up at the starting line I don’t believe he would have thought he would be in the team. Barlow, Cruse, Waywell, Myerscough, Mabbett, he beat them all – well done!

The very next week the Tour of Horwich started and again Wesham turned out in numbers – five races in six days – easy!  Ranger Charlie Pass led the way, Fireman Pete, Pistol Pete, Seasider Bates, Big George, Vickers, Dempsey, Sharratt, Cruse and Weller, they were all there taking the prizes home for Wesham. On the last day Alex drove over 280 miles to be there after representing England in Holland on the Saturday and only being one second slower – unreal!!! I made an appearance too and so did Steve Myerscough.  Some miles away Steve Littler was running for Lancashire in a Half Marathon and being first counter for our county in Humberside.

It’s great to see Gary and Barry Norman back running well after being troubled with injury for so long.

The next Interclub is our very own and it is a long time since we have had all our top runners free from injury so let’s hope we can field our strongest squad for a very long time.

Cheers Lee
