We
are never scared to race; you only have to look at the paper each Saturday to see this for yourself. We travel far and wide in search for a race
and I bet most times we out number any other club. We have all got our favourite races and I
have done most races in the area so it was nice to do a couple of races lately
which I have never done before. After
the ‘eye balls out’ of the Inter Club
at Preston with all the local
rivalry, it was food to find a low key trail race on our doorstep at Bamber Bridge. The only sour point was that, in the car park
I chose to mention that the night before, at the Inter Club at Preston, it was not the same without the race for
butties. The atmosphere had vanished and
so had most of the runners too. No
fighting to get to the bar which, to me, was what the mob matches were all
about. Good local fun. I suggested that Wesham must put on sandwiches, and then Kath and Julie Murphy
put me straight. No way, no chance! Typical women, once they have set their
minds on something they dig their trainers in – or should that be heels?
Anyway, back to the running. I don’t do politics. Just bring your own food. The
run was off-road through trees and paths. It was not flat but not too difficult
and great prizes at the end if you stayed.
Another
race I had never done before was a fast, flat, 5km race at Lancaster. It is held on a Saturday evening at 6.30 pm.
The field was not big but it did have good quality in it with our very
own Steve Littler winning the
race. The bonus for me was that I was
only moaning the week before that you never get mugs at races these days and ,
guess what, even better – a mug and a can of my favourite lager. The main reason why I did this race was that
the following day was the main event. I
would be swapping the blue vest of Wesham
for the tangerine shirt of Blackpool
F.C. and Finlay’s tour of Wembley. It would settle my nerves. I
had no need to worry. Once again Finlay
came up trumps with the minibus and organisation. We will not mention Martin getting lost after the match. Nothing could dampen our
spirits after witnessing the best match at Wembley
so far. It put United, Chelsea and Co. to shame. Nor that it rained all
day or the several beers we drank. It
was shining tangerine all the way back up the motorway. Bring on the local Derby
next year.
The next away day for Wesham
will be the Welsh Castles which Alex and Graham Vickers have been working very hard together to sort out
and which I am looking forward to as I have never done this before.
Cheers, Lee
